Power Management Power management reduces the power consumption of equipment when it is not being used and, therefore, effectively decreases energy costs as well as carbon emissions. When power management features are activated on a computer, a low-power or "sleep" mode is initiated on a monitor and CPU after a period of inactivity. Then, "waking up" a computer is generally a simple process of touching the keyboard or, on some systems, touching the power button. If a computer has been inactive for a period of time, however, it may be necessary to log in again. As announced in an e-mail memo on October 2, 2009, Computer Services is in the process of activating power management features on PC computers on the Temple and TU domains.* Power management enables Computer Services to "wake up" computers to conduct vulnerability patching, install antivirus updates, and scan for malware. This initiative will support Temple's sustainability efforts and not affect usability. Note that if you are a VPN (Virtual Private Network) user, you must register your office computer after power management is activated. You can then wake up your computer remotely. To register your computer and wake it up remotely, go to the Wake Up My Computer website at: http://wakeup.temple.edu. Instructions are available on the site. *Non-windows systems, such as Macintosh computers, are not included at this time.
