Computer Security Status Update

In a continuing effort to keep you informed, I would like you to know that we are making progress in addressing the issues caused by the recent phishing attack. In particular, the following measures are now in place:

  • We have turned on an outgoing spam filter which is working effectively. We will continue to monitor this filter;
  • We have hired a forensic team from IBM to review the nature of the attack and make recommendations to prevent future attacks;
  • We have acquired a third party service that monitors for phishing attacks against the University and then subsequently shuts down those sites exploiting Temple;
  • We will continue to monitor our e-mail system so that when an account starts spamming the Internet we can shut it down immediately.

Overall, we have made progress in restoring Temple’s reputation on the Internet. At this point, we have been removed from most of the Real-time Blackhole Lists. We still have one known issue whereby email sent from a temple.edu account to a yahoo.com account sometimes is placed in the recipient's Yahoo spam folder. We have contacted Yahoo about this issue and hope to have a resolution soon.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work to resolve our remaining issues.
