This letter is a follow-up to the memo we released on August
26, 2004 on
Preparing Temple Users for Windows XP SP2 Update.
If your computer is not running Windows XP, you can safely
ignore the rest of this message.
Computer Services has continued to evaluate Windows XP,
Service Pack 2, for standard computer operations. Since we
have found no further problems, and since there are definite
advantages to be gained by installing the update, we are
making a set of recommendations outlined below. These
recommendations are for standard usage and not for computers
in a computer lab environment. Lab managers should carefully
test the installation of SP2 before fully deploying it in
their own unique lab setting.
Regarding SP2, we recommend the following:
1. Install the firewall configuration utility.
If you are using a computer on campus and it is
connected to the Temple network, please make sure to
downloaded and run the firewall configuration utility
described in my
previous memo. (Please note, if you are a
residence hall student, you do not need the utility since it
was installed when you obtained Temple's antivirus
software.) If you haven't downloaded the utility yet, please
go to the following website to obtain it:
http://antivirus.temple.edu/enhance.asp
2. Turn on the Windows Automatic Update feature and
leave your computer turned on at all times.
Due to the size and mass distribution of the update file,
Microsoft will release XP Service Pack 2 to computers
through their automatic update feature over the next few
months in an order of their own choosing.
For instructions on how to set up this feature, go to:
http://www.temple.edu/cs/windowsupdateinstructions.htm#I
3. During the installation process, accept the defaults.
Once the software has downloaded and you have restarted
your computer as prompted, you will see the Security Center
screen. The default settings show that the Firewall and
Automatic Updates options are turned on. The Virus
Protection option may show a message indicating that XP
recognizes your antivirus software program but cannot report
on the status. Since all computers connected to the Temple
network should have Symantec AntiVirus installed, you can
ignore this notice. To accept the default settings, simply
close the Security Center window.
4. Manage the new pop-up blocker.
Pop-ups are small windows that appear from within certain
websites. For example, TUportal uses pop-up windows when you
select certain options. Unfortunately, many advertisers also
use pop-ups to post ads which is the reason why Microsoft
incorporated a pop-up blocker in the XP update.
If a "Pop-up blocked" message appears in a horizontal bar
across the screen when you try to access certain options in
a Temple site, such as TUportal, click on "click here."
Then, in the drop-down box, select "Always Allow Pop-ups
from This Domain" to fully access the site and prevent this
prompt from appearing again.
For more information on SP2 including instructions for
using the pop-up blocker, see the following Web site:

If you have any questions regarding SP2, please feel free
to contact the Help Desk during business hours at
215-204-8000 or send e-mail to
help@temple.edu. When you
request assistance, make sure to tell the consultant whether
or not you have installed SP2.
