As the spring semester approaches, Computer Services would like to give you guidance on your residence hall Internet and telephone service.
Wired Connection
- If you are returning with the same computer you had last semester and have the same room assignment, you will not need to go through the Get Connected process to re-register, unless you removed Temple's Symantec Endpoint Protection software. If you did uninstall this software over the break, you will need to go to http://getconnected.temple.edu once you are on campus to terminate your existing service and re-register. Please note also that your telephone service will still be active.
- If you have a new computer or a new room assignment, you must go through the Get Connected process to register your computer. Once you are in your room, connect your computer to your network jack, go to http://getconnected.temple.edu and follow the directions to request Internet service. You can also use the Get Connected web site to request voice mail service and look up your phone number.
Note: To use a wired connection, you will need an Ethernet cable. A 14-foot cable should be sufficient and usually costs less than $20 (available in the Temple University Book Store).
Wireless Connection
- If you used the TUresnet or TUresnetextra wireless network last semester and have the same computer or device, your Internet service will continue to work. Just reconnect to the TUresnet or TUresnetextra wireless network.
- If you have a Windows or Mac computer and did not use the wireless network last semester or have a different Windows or Mac computer, perform the Get Connected process listed above for a Wired Connection. Then register and connect to the TUresnet or TUresnetextra wireless networks.
- If you have a device other than a Windows or Mac computer and have not yet connected to the TUresnet or TUresnetextra wireless network, see the steps to register and connect. Please note that Computer Services does not support or recommend the setting up of wireless printers at this time.
- When you are on campus, but not physically in a Residence Hall, you should use the TUsecurewireless network for your wireless needs.
For security reasons, students are strictly prohibited from installing wireless routers, hubs, and other networking equipment in the residence halls. As a reminder, please review our policies regarding Technology Usage and Peer-to-Peer File Sharing. These policies can be viewed by going to www.temple.edu/cs/policies.
Computer Services makes every attempt to provide the resources necessary for a secure computing environment. Security is not possible without your cooperation and ongoing awareness. In addition to following the procedures in this memo, please take a moment to learn how to stay one step ahead of computer threats by reviewing a brief slide show called Recognize the Risks: Eight Computer Security Tips (PC/Mac version / iPad version)
