General Questions How much does Internet access cost? Internet service is an amenity that is included automatically in your housing bill. There is no separate charge for this service. To connect to the Internet, your computer must have the following resources:
I already have Symantec AntiVirus software or Norton AntiVirus or some other antivirus software on my computer. Do I still need to download the Symantec Endpoint Protection software? Yes, once you arrive on campus, you must remove your existing antivirus software and install Temple's Symantec Endpoint Protection software during the Internet registration process. Why do I need to install Temple's Symantec Endpoint Protection software? This software is required by Temple's Information Security Office in order to safeguard our students' computers and the network. What is a MAC/Adapter/Physical address? These terms all refer to the same thing--the unique address of your computer's Ethernet port. This address consists of 12 letters and numbers, in the format of: yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy What happens if I need help with this process? During the move-in period, Computer Services consultants will be in most residence hall lobbies to assist you with connection-related problems. You can also contact the Help Desk at 215-204-8000 to speak with a consultant. The Help Desk is located on the first floor of the TECH Center, 12th St. & Montgomery Ave. Does Temple offer spyware protection? The Symantec Endpoint Protection software includes anti-spyware protection. Can I use network equipment, such as a wireless access point, router, or hub? No. Network equipment, such as wireless access points, routers, and hubs are not permitted on Temple's network. How do I know if I have Windows XP Service Pack 3? To do this: Are telephone and Internet service different at the Edge Complex? Yes. Temple University leases spaces at the Edge Complex. Therefore, telephone and Internet services are not provided directly by the University. Similar to living in a private apartment or residence, students are responsible for establishing telephone and Internet service(s) with the landlord’s service provider. Students will receive information regarding services during Move-In Weekend. What are my ongoing responsibilities?
Wired Internet Questions How do I connect my computer for wired Internet access? Temple offers high-speed wired Internet access in the following residence halls: Main Campus: Elmira Jeffries • Hardwick • Johnson • Peabody • Temple Towers • To register for Internet service: 1. Plug your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer. a) You will be prompted for your AccessNet username and password. b) You will then be prompted to run a program called GetConnected. This program will guide you through: • removing any programs that will conflict with your Temple network connection, including:
• installing the Symantec Endpoint Protection software. c) Finally, your computer’s Ethernet (MAC) address and your room assignment will appear. After verifying this information and completing the registration process, your Internet connection should be available within an hour. Note: After you have connected to the Internet, do not uninstall or disable the Symantec Endpoint Protection software. This software is mandatory to ensure a safe and secure network environment. Wireless Internet Questions Do the residence halls offer wireless access? If you reside in one of the following residence halls, wireless coverage in your room is available via the turesnet and turesnetextra networks: Hardwick, Johnson, "1940", Peabody, Temple Towers, "1300", White, and Podiatry You can connect a laptop or other device (e.g., iPad, iPhone, iPod, smart phone, or game console) to these networks. Before you can use the turesnet or turesnetextra networks, however, you must register your laptop or other device. There is also wireless access in some residence hall lounge areas. For more information and a list of wireless locations, see Temple's Wireless Web site. What is the difference between the the turesnet and turesnetsecure networks? The turesnet network is your primary wireless network used for connecting laptops and devices, such as iPads and smart phones. The turesnet network offers full access to Temple's online resources, including Print on the Go remote printing capability. What devices can I connect to the residence hall wireless networks? You can connect a laptop, iPad, iPod, smart phone, tablet computer, or similar device to the turesnet network. You can connect a non-computer device, such as a game console to the turesnetextra network. Can I connect to the turesnet or turesnetextra networks anywhere on campus? No. The turesnet and turesnetextra networks are for residence hall use only. For general wireless access througout campus, please use the tusecurewireless or WiFi4Owls networks. Can I connect my printer to the wireless network? No. Computer Services does not support or recommend setting up wireless printers at this time. I am a Temple student, but do not reside in the residence halls. Can I use the wireless networks in the residence halls? You will not be able to connect in a residence hall room. You will, however, be able to connect to the WiFi4Owls and tusecurewireless networks, in various common areas and lounges. |
