General Questions
How much does Internet access cost?
Internet service is an amenity that is included automatically in your housing bill. There is no separate charge for this service.
To connect to the Internet, your computer must have the following resources:
- Windows: Windows 7 with at least 2GB RAM or Windows XP Service Pack 3 with at least 1GB of RAM
- Mac: Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard or later with at least 2GB RAM
I already have Symantec AntiVirus software or Norton AntiVirus or some other antivirus software on my computer. Do I still need to download the Symantec Endpoint Protection software?
Yes, once you arrive on campus, you must remove your existing antivirus software and install Temple's Symantec Endpoint Protection software during the Internet registration process.
Why do I need to install Temple's Symantec Endpoint Protection software?
This software is required by Temple's Information Security Office in order to safeguard our students' computers and the network.
What is a MAC/Adapter/Physical address?
These terms all refer to the same thing--the unique address of your computer's Ethernet port. This address consists of 12 letters and numbers, in the format of: yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy
Where can I download Java for my Mac?
On Macs with OS X v 10.7 Lion or OS X v 10.8 Mountian Lion, Java must be installed to enable the Symantec Endpoint Protection software to receive security updates. You can download Java by going to: http://antivirus.temple.edu/macintosh/bin/JavaForOSX.dmg
What happens if I need help with this process?
During the move-in period, Computer Services consultants will be in most residence hall lobbies to assist you with connection-related problems. You can also contact the Help Desk at 215-204-8000 to speak with a consultant. The Help Desk is located on the first floor of the TECH Center, 12th St. & Montgomery Ave.
Does Temple offer spyware protection?
The Symantec Endpoint Protection software includes anti-spyware protection.
Can I use network equipment, such as a wireless access point, router, or hub?
No. Network equipment, such as wireless access points, routers, and hubs are not permitted on Temple's network.
How do I know if I have Windows XP Service Pack 3?
To do this:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
3. When you are finished, click OK.
Are telephone and Internet service different at the Edge Complex?
Yes. Temple University leases spaces at the Edge Complex. Therefore, telephone and Internet services are not provided directly by the University. Similar to living in a private apartment or residence, students are responsible for establishing telephone and Internet service(s) with the landlord’s service provider. Students will receive information regarding services during Move-In Weekend.
What are my ongoing responsibilities?
- If you are using Microsoft Windows, make sure to turn on the Automatic Updates feature. This will ensure that you always receive the latest security patches from Microsoft. For instructions, go to http://www.temple.edu/cs/updates.html.
- It is important that you remain in compliance with Temple’s peer-to-peer file-sharing policy. This policy is available online at http://www.temple.edu/cs/policies.
The policy states that it is strictly prohibited to use “Temple University’s computer network to illegally download or share copyrighted materials, including music, games, and videos.”
If your computer has any file-sharing programs or illegally downloaded files, please remove them. Computer Services will not provide support for computers with peer-to-peer file-sharing software.
- Finally, do not uninstall or disable Symantec Endpoint Protection. This is a mandatory program that protects your computer from viruses and other security threats.
