ISC "How To" instructions:

How To Edit a UNIX Web Site Using Microsoft FrontPage 98

To use Front Page to edit a web page that resides in a UNIX account, you must first download the web pages to your local computer. Once on your local computer, you can edit and add web pages within Front Page.

Once you are done editing your web pages on your local computer, you must then transfer them back into your UNIX account- this is called "publishing" a web. Click here to learn how to publish your FrontPage web pages to your UNIX account.

Step 1: Create a directory on your local computer

  1. Create a directory on your local hard drive as the location you will download your UNIX account web pages to. For instance, you may want to create a directory called:

    C:\WEBS\your_course_number_here

Step 2: Download the web pages from your UNIX account to your local computer

  1. Start Front Page. At the Getting Started window, select Create a New Front Page Web.

  2. In section 1 of the New Front Page Web window, select Import an Existing Web.

  3. In section 2 of the New Front Page Web window, click on the Change button.

  4. In the Change Location window, type in the directory you created on your local hard drive that you will be importing your web pages to and click on the OK button. For instance:

    C:\WEBS\MUSIC101

  5. In section 2 of the New Front Page Web window, type in a title for your new Front Page Web. For example:

    Music 101- Music Appreciation

  6. Click on the OK button.

  7. You will be prompted to convert the folder you selected into a new Front Page Web. Select Yes.

  8. The Import Web Wizard- Choose Source window will appear. Select From A World Wide Web Site.

  9. In the Location box, type the full URL to your UNIX web site and click on the Next button. For instance:

    astro.ocis.temple.edu/~jsmith

  10. At the Import Web Wizard- Choose Download Amount window, uncheck all boxes and click on the Next button.

  11. At the Import Web Wizard- Finish screen, click on the Finish button.

Your UNIX web pages will be copied to your local hard drive, where you can now edit them in Front Page.

You must then upload ("publish") the new and changed pages back to your UNIX account.
