Dear Instructors using Blackboard,
On July 1, 2009, Computer Services will implement a new retention policy for
courses and organizations on the Blackboard system. At that time, courses and
organizations which have been “inactive” (not updated or modified
in any way) for two or more years will be removed from Blackboard.
It has become necessary to implement this policy because there are over 5,600
inactive courses and organizations. Eliminating these courses and organizations
will free storage space, improve system performance, and dramatically reduce
the time it takes to backup the Blackboard system.
If you would like to retain inactive courses or organizations, Computer Services
recommends archiving them. Archiving creates a compressed version of your course
or organization, which you can save to your computer. If needed, the archive
can be restored to Blackboard upon request.
If you do not need to save all content, you may opt to save only the grades from
an inactive course. This can be done using the “Download” feature
in the “Grade Center”. Downloading allows you to store grades on
your personal computer in a format that can be opened using Microsoft Excel or
other spreadsheet program.
Instructions for both archiving and downloading are detailed in the “Archiving
Your Course” how-to guide available on the Instructional Support Center
web site (isc.temple.edu) or directly at:
https://blackboard.temple.edu/bbcswebdav/orgs/ISCstaff/How-To%20Documents/Getting%20Started%20with%20Blackboard/Archiving%20a%20Blackboard%20Course.pdf
If you have questions or would like to set up a consultation on archiving or
downloading, please feel free to call or visit one of the Instructional Support
Centers at the locations listed below.
Have a great summer!
