Faculty Welcome As a faculty member at Temple, you have the opportunity to take advantage of state-of-the-art technology resources that have earned Temple numerous awards. For example, Temple was recognized by The Princeton Review as one of the premier technology campuses in the country, and also by Computerworld as one of the "Best 100 Places to Work in IT" for five consecutive years. TUportal provides access to numerous technology resources, including TUmail, Blackboard, TUlibrary, as well as systems to perform administrative functions. A summary of many of these resources is included in the Technology at Temple guide. You can access technology resources at Temple with an AccessNet account username and TUsecure password. An AccessNet account enables you to log in to the University’s online resources and services. For more information, see Obtaining an AccessNet Account. In addition, Computer Services offers numerous services and resources targeted to meet the special needs of faculty. Resources include access to Blackboard, a web-based online course management and delivery system with components for creating discussion groups, blogs, and wikis. News Items for Fall 2009 Get help using instructional technology The Instructional Support Center (ISC) provides consulting services, training, and access to state-of-the-art computer equipment to Temple faculty who are interested in incorporating technology into the teaching/learning process. Classroom Technology Support (CTS) is committed to enriching the educational experience at Temple University. CTS supports all centrally controlled technology classrooms and delivers and maintains media equipment to support academic instruction on the Main, Ambler, Center City, and Fort Washington campuses. Shop wisely with software discounts Temple faculty are eligible to receive discounts on the purchase of software. These educational prices are possible through a partnership that Temple has with a number of vendors. To qualify for the reduced prices, you may need to confirm your University status by faxing a copy of your Temple ID to the company. If you use a computer to perform your regular job duties, you are entitled to install one copy of selected Microsoft software at no charge on a personally owned computer. This benefit is available for work-related purposes only through the Microsoft Work-At-Home Software Distribution Program. In addition to educational software discounts, Temple also offers Symantec antivirus software for home use. For a small fee, you can purchase this software on a CD and receive periodic updates to protect your computer from viruses. Pinpoint your classroom building To find the location of your classroom building, log in to TUportal, go to "Temple Buildings," select Building Codes or Building Names, and then click on the building code or name to display a Google map. Note that you can also select Directions + Maps for additional information, directions, and pdf maps. As you move to various locations throughout Temple, you can take advantage of numerous wireless locations to connect to a variety of University resources. In addition to checking your e-mail and surfing the web, you can also access files on a public file server made available by your school or college. Setup instructions and additional information about wireless networks at Temple are available on the wireless web site. As part of Temple's sustainability effort, duplex (double-sided) printing is the default option in the TECH Center as well as in many computer labs on campus. Duplex printing saves paper and maximizes the quota of free laser printing that currently-enrolled students receive twice a year. Note that students can pay for additional printing through Diamond Dollars. Take time to learn new technology skills and tune up your existing skills by attending a computer seminar. The Computer Services Department offers technology seminars that are free to current Temple faculty. Seminars are designed for beginning as well as advanced users and cover a variety of topics, such as creating web sites and using Microsoft Office programs. Get help with Banner at the Resource Center Access to the Banner Finance system for authorized staff is centralized through TUportal. To help you learn about the new environment, training videos and documents are available in the Unified Resource Center. Topics include finding your new FOAPAL, using TUmarketplace, and navigating Self-Service Banner. To access the training materials, go to the top right corner of TUportal and click on the Help icon. Take advantage of numerous TU Gmail features If you use TU Gmail to access your Temple e-mail, you can take advantage of a number of features such as:
The TU Gmail Resource Center includes an FAQ section which offers a variety of information about using TU Gmail. Change your password twice a year Your AccessNet username and TUsecure password give you access to a variety of resources at Temple. To enhance the security of these resources, all members of the Temple Community are required to change their password every 180 days. Prior to the expiration date, Computer Services will e-mail a reminder to you. To change your password, log in to accounts.temple.edu with your current password and then click Your password. Note: If your password does expire, you will not have access to Temple general resources but you can log in to accounts.temple.edu with your current password to change it. Personalize your e-mail address When you received your AccessNet account, you were given an account name that is displayed as your e-mail address. Frequently, that address includes letters and numbers such as tuc47812@temple.edu. You do not have the option to change your AccessNet account name, but you can create an alternate e-mail name known as an alias. You can then use the alias to personalize your address. Use Euler for large computational research Faculty who are engaged in large computational research or coursework may be interested in taking advantage of Euler, a high-end computer. Euler is a Linux-based, Sun Microsystems computer featuring 16 64-bit CPU cores and six terabytes of storage with over 15 data analysis programs, including SAS, S-PLUS, and Maple. The site includes announcements about system outages, telephone availability, computer viruses, e-mail frauds, as well as maintenance that affects resources.
