The following instructions explain how to update your Thunderbird e-mail client to ensure that you are using Temple's secure settings.
1. Start Thunderbird. Then, click on the Tools menu at the top of the Thunderbird window and select Account Settings.
2. On the left side of the Account Settings window, make sure a minus sign appears to the left of the account name. If a plus sign appears instead, click on this plus sign to expand the list of options.
3. On the left side of the Account Settings window, click on Server Settings. Then, perform the following:
a) If the Server Type is listed as IMAP Mail Server, then make sure imap.temple.edu appears in the Server Name box.
If the Server Type is listed as POP Mail Server, then make sure pop.temple.edu appears in the Server Name box.
b) Click on Use secure connection (SSL).

4. In the left side of the Account Settings window, click on Outgoing Server (SMTP). Then, perform the following steps:
a) In the Server Name box, type: smtpauth.temple.edu
b) Click on the Use name and password box, so that a check mark appears.
c) In the User Name box, type your AccessNet username.
d) Under Use secure connection, click on TLS.
e) Click on OK to close the Account Settings window.
You'll be prompted to enter your AccessNet password the first time you send a message. The secure SMTP server will request this information. If you don't want to do this every time you send a message, click on the check box next to Use Password Manager to remember this password.

If you receive errors while trying to send e-mail, perform the following steps:
1. If you use third-party firewall software, such as Norton Internet Security, turn off the feature that scans outgoing e-mail.
2. If you still receive errors, go back to step 4. In the Port box, overwrite port 25 with port 587.
