Imporant Notice:
Temple Upgrades E-mail Security Standards
In early July 2006, security standards were tightened on the traffic coming into Temple's e-mail system. Temple's e-mail server now checks all messages with an @temple.edu From address for authentication. These upgraded standards were applied because of the significant increase in the number of phishing and spoofing schemes and general spam messages. Some of these messages appeared to originate from legitimate Temple addresses when they were, in fact, coming from outside Temple's network. Due to the appearance of a legitimate Temple address, a number of people were impacted by these scams.

If you use the TUmail Web site or if you list smtpauth.temple.edu as your outgoing server, the new
standards will not affect the way you access your mail. If, however, you use an outside smtp server in combination with an incoming server setting of pop.temple.edu or imap.temple.edu, you need to update your mail settings. For instructions on how to configure your outgoing smtp server to work with Temple's new e-mail standards, please see the links below.

Also, please note that the new standards do not allow you to use @temple.edu in the From address of an outside mailing service. This measure was taken to help prevent the deceptive use of Temple addresses.

Note that this change also impacts the use of e-mail on cell phones other than Verizon phones and Blackberrys.

If you need assistance or have any questions about the new security standards, please contact the Computer Services Help Desk at 1-8000.
