Customize Your E-Mail Address


When you activate your AccessNet account, you are assigned a personalized e-mail address, known as an alias. To learn about aliases, see the frequently asked questions listed below.

What is an alias?

An alias is a nickname used to personalize your @temple.edu e-mail address. You can have up to five e-mail aliases for your account. Unless it was already in use, an alias of firstname.lastname@temple.edu was automatically assigned to you when your account was activated (for example, russell.conwell@temple.edu).

How do I create an alias?

To create an alias:

  1. Go to the Cherry & White Directory, click Update your entry, and then log in.
    -or-
    Log in to TUportal and click Cherry & White Update.

  2. Type each alias into an Alias box, as shown below.

  3. To set an alias as your display e-mail alias, click on the circle to the left of the desired alias.

    Your display alias is used when sending mail in Blackboard and it appears in the Search Results box in the Cherry & White Directory.

  4. After editing the alias information, click Submit.

  5. TU Gmail users can then customize their From address. For instructions, see How does my e-mail address appear to recipients?.

    Note: This functionality is not available to Exchange users.

How do aliases appear in the Cherry & White Directory?

What is a display e-mail alias?

Your display alias is used when sending mail in Blackboard and it appears in the Search Results box in the Cherry & White Directory.

Will messages sent to my alias arrive in my same TUmail account?

Yes. An alias appears to be a separate e-mail address but messages are sent to your existing e-mail account.

After I create an alias, do I still need to use my AccessNet username?

You can use your e-mail alias to log in to TUmail, but you still need to use your AccessNet username to log in to Temple's systems, such TUportal.

How does my e-mail address appear to recipients?

In most cases, the mail will appear to come from your AccessNet-username@temple.edu (for example, tua00000@temple.edu). In Blackboard, however, the mail will appear to come from your display e-mail alias.

For TU Gmail users:

  • If you access TU Gmail through the TUmail website, you can change the From address so your outgoing messages appear to be sent from your alias instead of your original e-mail address.

    To set up your account to send from an alias:

    1. Log in to your TUmail account.
    2. Go to the upper-right corner, click the gear icon, and select Settings.
    3. Under Settings, select the Accounts tab.
    4. Under Send mail as, click Add another email address you own.
    5. In the Email address field, enter the alias you created and , such as rconwell@temple.edu.
    6. Click Next Step > Send Verification.
      Gmail will send a verification message to your original e-mail address to confirm that you own it.
    7. Go to TUmail, open the message from the Temple University Team, and click the link in the message to confirm your request.

    To send from an alias:

    1. Click Compose.
    2. Go the the From field, click the drop-down menu, and select the alias.
      Note: If the From field does not display, log out of your account and then log back in.

    To reply or forward with an alias:

    1. Click Reply or Forward.
    2. Next to the From field, click Change.
    3. Then, click the From field and select the alias.

  • If you access TU Gmail using an e-mail client such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail, you need to change the From address in the client.

  • When you subscribe to a Listserv mailing list, you are identified by your From address. If you change your From address, you may not be able to post messages to your lists. In order to post messages, you must use the same From address that you had when you subscribed.

For Exchange users:

The functionality for changing the From address is not available.
