Frequently Asked Questions
How do I perform a basic search?
The Basic Search feature on the Cherry & White Directory allows you to search by:
- a person's last name (Conwell)
- a person's first name (Russell)
- a department name (Admissions)
To search, type your search information and click the Search button. Note that you can type your search name in uppercase or lowercase letters. For hyphenated names, you must include the hyphen.
To view the full entry for a person, click the person's information in search result.
How do I perform an advanced search?
The Advanced Search feature gives you greater control over search criteria. The Search for drop down box allows you to expand your search to include all Temple students, faculty, staff, or everyone or to limit it to students, faculty, or staff.
You can also select from the following additional categories: e-mail address, direct phone, and department. In addition, the Advanced Search feature provides greater flexibility by enabling you to tailor your search by selecting contains, is, begins with, or sounds like from the drop-down box. "Begins with" or "sounds like" are helpful when you are not sure of the correct spelling of a person's name.
What categories of people are included in the search results?
If you are on campus, all members of the Temple community are included with the exception of guests, Temple University Health System employees, alumni, and retirees (non-emeritus).
If you are off-campus and log in with your AccessNet username and password, you will have access to the same functionality as you would from on-campus. If you do not log in, you will only be able to perform up to three searches per day.
What information appears in the search results?
Depending on your role within the university, the following information appears:

Can I search from off-campus access?
Yes. If you access the directory from off-campus and log in with your AccessNet username and password, you will have access to the same functionality as you would from on-campus.
If you do not log in, you will be limited to three searches a day per computer.
Will the Temple work address be listed for student workers?
No. Mailing addresses and phone numbers do not appear for student workers.

I am a student and do not want my information to be listed. What can I do?
If you do not want your information to be listed in the Cherry & White Directory, please contact the Help Desk by submitting a TUhelp request.
I am an employee and my department name is incorrect. What can I do?
Your Vice President or Business Manager can contact Human Resources and request a department name override for the Cherry & White Directory.
What is the difference between Name and Preferred Name?
The Name is the official name listed by the Office of the Registrar or Human Resources. The Preferred Name is what appears in Self-Sevice Banner, which you have the ability to update.

Yes. The same phone numbers will appear both from within and from outside the university. If you do not want a particular phone number to appear in the Cherry & White Pages:
- Login into TUportal and click the Self-Service Banner link under TUapplications on the left.
- Click Personal Information.
- Click Update Addresses and Phones.
- Click Current to the left of Temple Directory.
- Click on the Unlisted check box for each phone number you don't want to appear in the Cherry & White Directory.
- Click Submit. Your update will be processed overnight and appear the next morning.
How do I use the Add to Contacts feature?
When you click an entry in the Search Results, the Profile appears for that person. When you click Add to Contacts, you will be able to download a vCard (electronic business card) for that person. The vCard file will have the person's name and will be downloaded to the location where your web browser downloads files.
To add the person to your e-mail contacts, perform one of the following:
- If you are using Microsoft Outlook, click on the file to open the vCard. Then click Save & Close to add the person's information to your list of contacts.
- If you are using the TUmail web site to access TU Gmail:
- Click the down arrow next to Mail towards the top left corner and select Contacts.
- Click Import Contacts.
- Click Choose File and select the file.
- Click Import.
How can I print a directory listing?
When you click an entry in the Search Results, the Profile appears for that person. To print the entry, click Print. The Profile will appear on the upper half of the page, and the mailing address (suitable for printing labels) will print in the lower half of the page.
Can I see a campus map with a a faculty or staff member's building location?
Yes. When you click an entry in the Search Results, the Profile appears for that person. To view a campus map with the building location, click Map It.
Why doesn’t my location display properly in the Map It feature?
For proper display, you need to review your address entry in Self-Service Banner. Make sure that line one lists the postal address of your building and line 2 lists your building and/or room number. For instructions on updating your address, see the Updating Your Directory Listing.
What is an e-mail alias?
An alias is a nickname used to personalize your @temple.edu e-mail address. You can have up to five e-mail aliases for your account. Unless it was already in use, an alias of email@example.com was automatically assigned to you when your account was activated (for example, firstname.lastname@example.org).
The alias listed as your display alias is used when sending mail in Blackboard and appears in the Search Results box in the Cherry & White Directory. For more information, see Customize Your E-Mail Address.
