New Technology in Smart Classrooms
Level 0 Classrooms Level 0 classrooms have no technology.
Level 1 classrooms are lecture halls or classrooms with 80 to 300 seats. The design of Level 1 classrooms is intended to support an electronic learning environment where the primary mode of instruction is lecture/presentation. Level 1 classrooms include:
Level 1 classrooms are supported by Computer Services. Media support personnel help with room setup and shutdown; during class, instructors can call for assistance via a telephone in the room. Level 1 classrooms are scheduled centrally by the Office of the Vice Provost.
Level 2 classrooms are smaller than Level 1 classrooms, less liberally equipped with media, and designed for a greater variety of teaching styles. These classrooms accommodate seating for 25-80 students. Classrooms with up to 35 seats use audio from the ceiling mounted projector. Larger classrooms have audio amplification. Level 2 rooms include:
The majority of Level 2 classrooms are supported by Computer Services; a few Level 2 classrooms are supported by individual schools and colleges. Media support personnel help with room setup and shutdown; during class, instructors can call for assistance via a telephone in the room.
Level 3 classrooms are similar in size and layout to Level 2 classrooms, but the podium is smaller and less equipment is permanently installed in the room. Additional equipment can easily be brought into the classroom and connected to the projector through a patch panel. This is a relatively new level of classroom technology being pilot tested by the College of Engineering and working successfully. Level 3 classrooms include:

Level 4 classrooms are similar in size and layout to Level 2 and 3 classrooms, but all media except the projector is delivered to the room on a moveable cart. Level 4 classrooms are available only in the Tuttleman Learning Center. Level 4 classrooms include:
Equipment and support are available from Computer Services. Media support personnel deliver the required equipment on a mobile cart, make the necessary cable connections, setup and test the equipment, and return after class to pick up the equipment; during class, instructors can call for assistance via a telephone in the room.
Level 5 classrooms have Internet access and a screen. All media devices, including the projector, are delivered on a moveable cart. Level 5 classrooms include:
Most smart carts are provided by Computer Services. Some schools and colleges provide smart carts as well. Media support personnel deliver the required equipment on a mobile cart, make the necessary cable connections, setup and test the equipment, and return after class to pick up the equipment.
Level 6 classrooms are PC or Macintosh computer classrooms. Rooms contain one workstation for each student as well as an instructor teaching station. Seating arrangements vary from traditional classroom style to clusters. Seating capacity ranges from 15 to 35. Level 6 classrooms include:
Level 7 classrooms provide videoconferencing capability and are used for distance learning courses. The maximum seating capacity of a Level 7 classroom is 25. Level 7 classrooms include:
Level 7 classrooms are primarily scheduled through the Office of On-Line Learning. To schedule meetings, reservations are made through Computer Services. Computer Services hires an outside contractor to provide technical support for classes. For meetings, the department scheduling the meeting pays for the outside contractor.
