Subject:
Temple’s Dial-up Modem Service to be Discontinued

Please be advised that on May 10, 2007, the Temple University dial-up modem service through the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) lines will be discontinued. New high speed technology, such as cable modems and DSL, has made Temple’s dial-up hardware obsolete. Consequently, funding to maintain this equipment is no longer practical. In addition, Temple cannot continue to assume the network security risks inherent in providing this service.

If you use Temple’s dial-up service, please make plans now to move to a commercial Internet service provider. If you still wish to use a dial-up modem, service providers such as DCAnet, Earthlink, among others, still offer 56K dial-in access for a monthly fee. High speed connectivity, however, is strongly recommended. A fast connection will enable you to take full advantage of the Internet and allow you to update your computer with Windows and Macintosh patches that are critical to keeping your computer functioning properly and securely.

The City of Philadelphia has also contracted with Earthlink for reduced rates for wireless Internet access. To see if this service is available in your area, go to the Wireless Philadelphia website.
