Can I order a computer with a Home Version Operating System?
There is not enough security devices on the Home Version Operating Systems to safeguard Temple University's network against virus attacks and hackers. If a system is ordered with a Windows Home Operating System, it must be upgraded to either Windows XP Pro, Vista Business, or above. End users can take advantage of Temple University's Microsoft Campus Agreement to obtain the appropriate operating system for the upgrade. Please be advised that some upgrades may take hours to complete and you may need to adjust drivers within the system for compatibility.
Once
an order has been placed, how long will it take before I receive
my computer system?
Manufacturers typically quote a two-week lead time from the date
they receive the order.
Are there any fees associated with computer hardware purchases?
Yes, Software and Recycling fees.
For more information on the Software Fee, please refer to the Computer Services Memo dated August 2, 2004 titled "New Contract Simplifies Software Licensing."
Information regarding Recycling Fees can be found on the Computer Recycling Center Fee Structure website.
What is the difference between RAM and a Hard Drive?
Random Access Memory (RAM) is memory that is an active area, which
temporarily stores information that is currently being utilized
by the computer user. Information stored in RAM is purged when the
computer is shutdown. A hard drive is an area of permanent magnetic
storage. Application software and data files are stored there for
access when needed. This information remains on the hard drive even
when the computer is shutdown.
How do I purchase a computer?

graphic or mathematical intensive applications, then we recommend
you purchase at least 3GB RAM. Manufacturers provide the minimum
hardware requirements to run their software on the shrink-wrap package.
To obtain this information for software products through Temple
University's Software Site Licensing program, please go to the Software
Site License page and follow the links to the manufacturer's
website.
Is a cable included in the purchase of a new printer?
Typically
they are not, however, there are some models that do include a cable
with the printer. Some printers include parallel and USB interfaces,

What is the difference between a flat panel display and a flat screen
display?
A
flat panel display is similar to a very high quality notebook display
and therefore maximizes your workspace area. The panel is typically
two inches in depth and does not utilize a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube).
Flat panel displays are more expensive than conventional displays.
A flat screen display utilizes a CRT, which is flat, not rounded.
The flat design of the tube reduces glare. This type of monitor
is a conventional display and is typically 16 inches in depth.
What is the difference between an Apple Computer and a Windows based
computer (PC)?
Apple
Computer Corporation manufactures Power Macintosh computers that
utilize the Macintosh operating system, and Apple is the sole manufacturer
of the computers. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is RISC (Reduced
Instruction Set Computing) based and Apple's hardware is proprietary
- no clones. Several companies including Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo manufacture computers utilizing the Windows operating
systems. The Intel processor in these computers are CISC (Complex
Instruction Set Computing) based. However, with the induction of the Leopard Operating System onto Apple hardware, the end user will have the ability to function in both Mac and PC mode.
Does a new computer include a network card?
Many
standard configurations include an Ethernet network card. Be certain
that your office has a network port/drop that can be used to connect
your computer to the university network and access the internet.
Do I need a fax/modem or wireless card?
If
you have a network port/drop then you typically will not need a
fax modem to access the internet. If you do not have a network port/drop
then either a wireless or fax/modem card can be used to provide internet access. For information on how to obtain wireless routers and to establish a wireless network connection, visit the Telecommunications Network Services website.
What is the difference between a network card and a wireless card?
A network interface card allows you to access your network through the use of a cable connection through a network drop. A wireless card does not have a physical constraint but rather access is made by radio waves and/or microwaves. In order for this connection to take place your system must contain a wireless card and have access to a wireless network.
What is the difference between Inkjet and Laser printers?
Inkjet
printers print in black and color and utilize a technology that
sprays ink on paper. Laser printers typically print in black by
placing toner on a page. Laser printers produce faster and higher
quality output than Inkjet printers.
Is application software included with the purchase of a new computer?
Typically
it is not, however some manufacturers offer special bundles which
include an office style application (i.e., Word and Excel). Please
refer to Computer Business Services Software Site Licensing page
for a list of available products.
Can I purchase any brand of microcomputer?

The system must be FCC Class B certified and UL listed. The manufacturer
should be able to provide you with a Declaration of Conformity,
which states that the product has been tested and complies with
FCC regulations.
Can I purchase a computer through the discount stores?
Many
of the discount stores do not accept a purchase order. Frequently
the discount stores are offering computers which are manufactured
for home use. These computers often include a warranty and/or a
procedure for obtaining service that is unacceptable to Temple University.
