Software Site Licensing FAQs

General Software Site Licensing

topWhat is a Software Site License?

Software Site License refers to software licenses made available via volume purchase agreements that have been negotiated on Temple University's behalf.  By entering into these contractual and/or purchase commitments, we are able to provide site licensed software at drastically reduced prices.

topWhat is the difference between a Software License and Media?

A software license gives end users the right to use and install software.  Media refers to the CD-ROM or DVD that the software is stored on.

topWhat does Software Assurance, Upgrade Plan and Maintenance mean?

Software Assurance, Upgrade Plan and Maintenance are all additional options offered with the purchase of several licenses in the Software Site Licensing Program.  They provide end users with any upgrades available for software purchased for the life of our contract. These options can only be purchased with a license and cannot be purchased alone.

Computer Business Services strongly urges the purchase of these options when available. Please see our Available Products page for contract terms and to see if Software Assurance, Upgrade Plans or Maintenance is offered for your license.

No.  The Microsoft Campus Agreement licenses the Microsoft Operating Systems and Office Suites on a subscription basis. This agreement coversall TU Faculty and Staff computers as well as all University owned computer labs for the following products:

  • Office Enterprise 2007
  • Windows XP Professional Upgrades
  • Windows Vista Enterprise Upgrades
  • Office Professional 2004 and 2008 for Mac

The Microsoft Office Operating Systems and Office Suites are provided at no additional charge.  A one-time $90.00 Software Fee is added to each new CPU, Laptop and Computer System purchase to cover the licensing fees.

For more information regarding the Software Fee, please refer to the Computer Services Memo dated August 2, 2004 titled "New Contract Simplifies Software Licensing."

topHow do I acquire other Microsoft products such as Project, Visio and Windows Server?

All Microsoft Products, with the exception of Office and Windows, are available for purchase under our Microsoft Select Site License Program. The Academic Select Agreement is a flexible, volume-based program designed to reduce the total cost of software ownership.

Licenses acquired under the Academic Select Agreement are perpetual (no renewal required) and are owned by the department funding the purchase.

For more information on the Microsoft Select Site License Program, see our Microsoft Program page.   To find out how to place an order, see our How to Order page.
