There are still some members of the Temple community who are
running the Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating system. If
you fall into this category, Computer Services would like
you to be aware that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 95
and only supports Windows 98 on a fee basis. Microsoft will
continue to support Windows 98 through June 30, 2006 and,
after that, online self-help will be available through June
30, 2007.
Temple University’s Help Desk consultants no longer
support Windows 95. As for Windows 98, Computer Services is
finding it increasingly more difficult to provide support
for this operating system. Consultants are also discovering
various problems accessing Temple's systems using Windows
98.
If you are currently running Windows 95 or 98, Computer
Services strongly recommends that you upgrade to Windows XP.
Faculty and staff can obtain XP at no charge for existing
on-campus computers and students can purchase XP at a
substantial discount.
You may have to upgrade your computer in order to use
Windows XP. To properly run XP, your computer should meet
the following basic requirements:
- 800 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor
- 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM (Random Access Memory)
- 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space
Note that Microsoft suggests lower minimum requirements
for Windows XP. Our recommendations, however, are based on
our experience; for adequate performance, your system should
meet the minimum requirements listed above.
We have created a Web site to help you determine your
current configuration and to inform you of other upgrade
issues. To review the site, go to:
http://www.temple.edu/cs/windowsupgradehelp.html
The Web site includes instructions on how to check your
current configuration, amount of RAM, and free disk space. A
link to the Microsoft Update Advisor is also included as
well as information on how to obtain Windows XP software.
