Created a Unified Resource Center on TUportal as a central repository of information about the new systems for the community.
- Set up a disaster recovery infrastructure for the ERP initiative. Purchased a new Storage Area Network (SAN) for the Wachman Hall Data Center. Migrated the pre-production environment to the Center to enable recovery of data in the event of a disaster.
- Pushed forward an initiative to update all disaster recovery plans for DR-level 0 systems. DR level 0 systems refer to the mission critical systems of the University, which in case of a disaster need to be back up and running in at most one week. As a result of this effort, the University’s mission critical, enterprise level systems now have an up-to-date, well-documented plan for recovery, if a disaster were to occur.
- Designed a highly available VMware infrastructure which resides in two data centers. The result is a ten to one reduction in physical servers, which greatly reduces the amount of time needed for server administration, as well as a reduction in the amount of energy needed to power the servers.
- Citrix Xen Apps is a network security application designed to provide secure access to Internet Native Banner (INB) from off campus. When off campus, employees first need to authenticate using Citrix before being able to access INB through the TUportal web site.
- Completed implementation of the TUsecure project, an initiative to provide everyone in the University with a single username and password for most systems.
- Migrated over 37,000 student and 8,000 alumni e-mail accounts from in-house Mirapoint system to Google hosted system.
- Offered departments the choice of Gmail or Exchange for employee e-mail systems; approximately 95% of employees moved to Gmail.
- Handled over 86,000 support calls and 12,500 office visits through the Help Desk location and support team.
- Implemented Remedy for tracking all Help Desk support requests.
- Implemented TUhelp for the submission and tracking of support requests.
- Implemented Start of Semester/Getconnected for Fall 2008/Spring 2009; created and released a residence hall lobby support Web site application which connected to Remedy for tracking requests.
- Tested, configured, and implemented GammaQ software to manage walk-in traffic for Student Financial Services.
- Set up and implemented several departmental Xerox printers.
- Upgraded SMS (Systems Management Server) to SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) for managing resources on the Active Directory.
- Conducted extensive testing for and rolled out Wireless4owls.
- Prepared for and implemented Teach for America Move-in.
- Created extensive documentation for TUmarketplace and updated the Knowledge Base with TUmarketplace information.
- Prepared for and monitored four Board of Trustee meetings, including Lincoln Field event.

- Moved Geology department to Temple domain and reconfigured over 80 workstations.
- Implemented feature to inform callers of expected call waiting time on Help Desk Agent lines.
- Upgraded McGann system which handles all transactions for Parking Services.
- Replaced IntelliResponse at the Help Desk with the Knowledge Base to provide information about how to get things done at Temple.
- Worked with the Sustainability Office to further implement duplex printing in non-Computer Services labs.
- In anticipation of the Tyler School of Art move to Main Campus, the TECH Center added approximately 28 workstations.
- Installed videoconferencing capability in the TECH Center, room 111.
Blackboard was upgraded from version 7 to version 8. The upgrade added new features such as enhancements to the Grade Center; integration with Scholar, a free social bookmarking tool; and licensing for SafeAssign, a plagiarism detection program. In addition, two new modules–Content and Outcomes–were installed in the suite of Blackboard applications.
Blackboard Content is an online storage and e-portfolio solution that integrates with Blackboard courses and organizations. Content was pilot tested in the School of Pharmacy and the College of Education. In early summer of 2009, this module was made available to all Temple students, faculty, and staff
Blackboard Outcomes is used for assessment of student learning and institutional effectiveness. In conjunction with the Provost Office, three pilot projects using Outcomes were implemented in the General Education Program. These projects included:
- Creating and deploying 16,000 surveys to over 4,000 first-year writing students.
- Creating a curriculum map for the U.S. Society program.
- Creating and deploying rubrics for assessing over 300 papers collected in the Analytical Reading and Writing program.
Completed phase 6 of the Smart Classroom Plan. Smart classrooms include built-in multimedia, Internet, and computing capabilities. Phase 6 included the following:
- Converting twenty classrooms to smart classrooms.
- Upgrading six lecture halls in Anderson and Gladfelter Halls to 16x9 projection.
- Configuring multipoint video conferencing, which enables deans on Main campus to communicate with deans on the Japan and Rome campuses during Council of Dean’s meetings.
- Coordinating and hosting a TurningPoint (clicker) User Conference attended by thirty-three colleges and universities
- Configuring and pilot testing VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) touch panels in four smart classrooms in preparation for future 2-way communication through touch panels.
- Licensing and setting up the help request, monitoring, and alert system for all smart classrooms, conference rooms, labs, and breakout rooms in the Tyler School of Art building and Alter Hall.
- Alter Hall, Tyler School of Art, and the School of Medicine
Provided support for associated computer technologies. Installed voice, data, wireless, and cable television service in the new homes for the Fox School of Business and Management, Tyler School of Art on the Main Campus, and the School of Medicine on the Health Science Center campus. Wireless installation included 90 access points for Alter Hall; 50 access points for Tyler; and 123 Meru access points at the School of Medicine, providing 100% wireless access throughout the building.
Telecommunications support was provided for the following departments and offices that changed locations as well as some technology support:
- Main Campus
Art Education, Art History Department, Baptist Temple Office, Dean’s office for the College of Science and Technology, Office of Institutional Research, Office of Special Events, Office of the Vice Provost, and TUP (Temple University Press) Administrative Department
Department of Cardiology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Orthopedics, Fetal Monitoring Unit, Labor and Delivery Unit, Maternity Department, Maternity Triage, Medical School’s Administration Department and SDIM Center, Pediatric Audiology, Pediatric Emergency Room, Therapeutic Recreation, TUH Supply Chain, and Urology Department
In addition, Jeanes Hospital Senior Health Center moved to 9331 Old Bustleton Avenue and the senior leadership of TUHS moved from TASB to the Boyer Pavilion, 9th floor.
- Northeastern Hospital
The majority of the voice and data services were disconnected at this location. This site now operates as an outpatient facility offering a Ready Care Center, Diagnostic Imaging services, Chemotherapy, Endoscopy, and Lab services.
- Tyler Campus
Disconnected all telephones and data services on the Elkins Park campus when the school moved to Main Campus.
Work continued on the five year network upgrade project that began in 2006. Below is a summary of the work that was completed in this fiscal year.
- Wireless Upgrade
Wireless hardware was replaced with 394 Meru access points at the following locations:
Main Campus: 1700 N. Broad Street, 1810 Liacouras Walk, 1940 Residence Hall, Anderson Hall, Annenberg Hall, Barton Hall, Beury Hall, Bio-Life Sciences Building, Carnell Hall, Conwell Hall, Edberg-Olsen building, Engineering and Architecture building, Gladfelter Hall, Mitten Hall, Paley Library, Pearson Hall, Presser Hall, Ritter Hall and Ritter Annex, Student Center, Sullivan Hall, Temple Towers,Tuttleman Learning Center, University Services Building, Wachman Hall, Weiss Hall, and White Hall
HSC Campus: Faculty Student Union Building, Kresge Hall, Medical Research Building, Old and New Dental School, and Pharmacy-Allied health Building
Wireless hardware was also replaced at the Ambler Campus, the College of Podiatric Medicine, Fort Washington Campus, and TUCC.
In addition, 170 access points were installed in the buildings that belong to the College of Liberal Arts and 20 Meru access points were installed in ten Smart Classrooms located in Speakman Hall. Finally, the wireless network in TUH buildings was upgraded with 191 Meru access points.
- Network Core Improvements
--Made Improvements to the core components on the Temple enterprise network.
--Installed new Crossbeam firewalls on Main Campus and on the TUHC network. The new firewalls are robust and resilient, and provide redundancy. The redundant firewalls on the Main Campus are located in the Bell Building and Conwell Hall.
--Installed new Juniper routers on our two Internet services. Increased the bandwidth on the Cogent connection to a gigabit and the Verizon connection to 250Mbps. As part of our disaster recovery plan, one Internet connection is in the Bell Building and the other is in Conwell Hall.
--Installed a new F5 load balancer on the TUHS network.
--Upgraded the core networking hardware in the Old Medical School and Parkinson Pavilion switchrooms.
--Upgraded the building distribution hardware in the GSB computer room and in Rock Pavilion.
--Replaced and upgraded the building distribution hardware with Nortel 5530 switches in the following buildings: Podiatric Residence Hall, Pearson Hall, Ambler Library, Ambler East and West Hall, and the Kardon Building.
--Installed a Blue Socket appliance on Main Campus and HSC to provide authentication for the Temple wireless network.
- Verizon Wireless installed a cell site on the roof of Wachman Hall to improve cellular service on Main Campus.
- Verizon Wireless also installed (at no cost to Temple) an in-building antenna system ) in the Superblock on the HSC campus. This included all buildings located between Tioga and Ontario and Germantown and Broad Street.
- Verizon Wireless also installed this antenna system in the Boyer Pavilion. The in-building antenna system provides 100% wireless coverage in each of these buildings.
- Started work on the “Stealth tree” (cell tower) on the parking lot side of the Ambler campus. This will provide cellular coverage to staff and students on this campus.
- Activated video streaming at Geasy Field to allow the Athletic department to broadcast varsity games over the Internet.
- Installed 51 “emergency phones” throughout the CLA buildings. If a student picks up a handset on one of these phones, it automatically rings to Campus Safety and displays the phone location on the CallerID screen.
- Installed 60 data drops for a new lab at the School of Podiatric Medicine and 30 data drops in a new student lab in the Ambler Library building.
