  • Ambler Learning Center Grand Opening
  • Start of a 36-month project to upgrade all networking hardware throughout the Temple's campuses
  • Implementation of the Paperless Admission project to replace the paper-based admissions process with a state-of-the-art electronic document imaging/workflow system
  • Completion of the course renumbering project
  • Implemenatation of a new class lists portlet which displays student enrollments along with students' photographs
  • Continued implementation of the Five Year Smart Classroom Plan
  • Continued implementation of the Five Year Lab Plan
  • Installation of Microsoft Exchange for senior administration

  • Procedures established to create e-mail accounts for prospective students

  • Pilot program implemented to create alumni e-mail accounts

  • Changes to over 50 applications allowed the use of AccessNet username and password as the single means of authentication

  • Five-year upgrade plan developed for Smart Classrooms

  • Tuttleman Scholars Information Center upgraded

  • TUmail and TU Calendar enhanced; TUmail issue of Bits&PCs produced; TUmail tip of the week created

  • UVote Web site design enhanced and incorporated into TUportal; first online election took place

  • Student information systems (ISIS, OWLnet, and OWLink) updated to accommodate new presidential academic policies

  • Student Finance and Human Resources Systems upgraded

  • Employee pay stubs enhanced to include sick, vacation, and personal leave balances

  • First phase of Kronus Time Tracking for Temple University Hospital completed and implemented; Kronus Time Tracking completed and implemented for student workers in Academic Computer Services

  • OWLnet enhanced to include Web-based student orientation scheduling and placement testing and requests for enrollment verification letters and financial award letters

  • Report2Web system implemented to make Cost Center Reports available online

  • Consolidated tape backup system installed for departmental servers

  • Chief Information Security Officer hired; Security Roundtable established; Network Security Policy developed and implemented; Comprehensive Information Security Program (CISP) developed and implemented; Security controls in Wachman Hall Data Center enhanced and renovated

  • Telephone system upgraded

  • Network backbone upgraded to Gigabit capacity

  • Temple connected to the Internet2 network

  • Computer Recycling Center established

  • Telephone bills made available on the web

  • New outdoor emergency phones installed

  • "Surf Station," a free laptop loaner program, opened in the Student Center; wireless zones on campus expanded

  • OWLnet features enhanced

  • New allocation methodology for the Computer & Technology Fee developed and instituted

  • Online purchase requisitioning system developed

  • 24-hour computer lab access made available in Tuttleman Learning Center

  • OWLnet features enhanced to include admission application status checking

  • Online computer seminar registration debuts

  • Calendar program added to the Mailbox website

  • SSH Secure Shell made available as an alternative to Telnet

  • New ISCs open at HSC and Ambler

  • Login authentication implemented to monitor activity on public computers

  • Astro/Blackboard account creation automated through website

  • Blackboard CourseInfo upgraded to Blackboard 5

  • Residence Hall phone/Internet service application available through website

  • Blackboard CourseInfo program, installed on a Dell PowerEdge running Windows NT, introduced

  • Dedicated SMTP server implemented

  • DCANet program for dial-in access negotiated

  • Proxy server implemented for restricted access to Temple resources, such as the library databases

  • Web interface for Listserv implemented; lists moved from IBM VM to Unix system

  • IMAP services implemented for accessing e-mail on Unix systems

  • Mailbox website introduced for accessing Temple e-mail

  • Tuttleman Learning Center opens · Diamond Online Catalog becomes available

  • Thunder Unix accounts folded into Astro system

  • Astro Unix system upgraded to two DEC Alpha 4100s

  • Compute, an Alpha 8200 running Unix, introduced as a high-end research system

  • Interactive Voice Response system expanded and renamed the Diamond Line

  • Instructional Technologies User Group (ITUG) formed for faculty to share ideas

  • Instructional Support Center (ISC) opens in Wachman Hall

  • Campus information posted online via Gopher program

  • Astro, a CDC (Control Data Corporation) 4680 system running Unix launched

  • Evening seminars are offered

  • VM system is upgraded from a 4381 to a 3081K running the VM/XA operating system

  • Paley Scholars Information Center opens

  • New Wiseowl modems are installed

  • Microcomputer Purchases Program is initiated



Fall 1989
  • Computer Guidebook is introduced to provide an overview of Temple's computer resources
