About CS

Welcome: A Message from Timothy O'Rourke,
Vice President of Computer and Information Services
Timothy O'Rourke

November 24, 2003

As the semester winds down and students and faculty prepare for finals, I would like to update you on several important technology issues at Temple.

AntiVirus Program

Our antivirus initiative continues to be a major priority for the University. We are working toward our goal of having Symantec AntiVirus software installed on every campus computer before the end of the year. So far, over 8,500 copies of the software have been downloaded from Temple's antivirus website to on-campus computers. In addition, 634 copies of the software have been purchased for home use. Information about Temple's AntiVirus Program is available on the Virus Information website.

Computer and Network Security Policy

Over a relatively short period of time, Temple's network has evolved to become a vital component of University operations. To maintain and protect the network, it is important that University students and personnel have clear and definite usage and security standards to follow. These standards have now been established in the Computer Network and Security Policy. I encourage everyone, especially system administrators, to become familiar with and adhere to these policies. The Computer and Network Security Policy is now available online on the policies.temple.edu website.

New Seminar Schedule

The seminar schedule for December, January, and February is now available on the seminar website. These seminars present a unique and convenient opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn new technology skills and to improve and enhance existing skills.

Computer Services offers over 70 different seminars on a variety of computer topics, such as using Office XP, creating web pages and websites, and working with online databases. In addition, seminars for faculty on using Blackboard and for administrators on working with OWLink and ISIS, Report2Web, FMS, and WebFocus are also offered. Keep in mind that when you visit the website to review the seminars, the online registration feature provides a quick and easy way for you to enroll in seminars.

Spring Semester Planning

While the end of the Fall semester is in sight for Temple students and faculty, Computer Services has the start of the Spring semester in full view. We are currently making preparations for the next semester on several fronts. For example, the computer labs require both technical and physical maintenance—from standardizing software to routine cleaning of the lab equipment. Meeting special requests for academic projects, such as digitizing language tapes and CDs and uploading them to the streaming web server, will take place during the semester break as will updating printed publications and website information. During this time frame, we also perform maintenance on smart classrooms, general systems, and network components. To meet the increase demand for Help Desk support at the start of the Spring semester, we will also be training supplemental personnel to assist the University community.

Finally, as the holiday season approaches, I would like to extend my sincere wishes to you, your family, and friends for a happy and safe holiday.
