About CS

A Message from Timothy O'Rourke,
Vice President, Computer and
Financial Services & CIO
Tim O'Rourke

I would like to welcome Temple students to Spring 2011 semester. I wish you success in your studies as you pursue your degree. While you work on your class projects, please consider taking advantage of the resources outlined on the CS Student web page.

Providing technical resources for students is an ongoing priority in Computer Services. This semester in particular will usher in a technical milestone with the introduction of the Banner system to our students.

The Banner Student system is one part of a larger initiative called Project Enterprise. The purpose of this project is to replace Temple's aging administrative systems and integrate them into one database with a unified interface. The transition has been lengthy and complex since all administrative processes and data must be configured and moved over to the new platform.

Staff members from all departments of the University have been involved in the development of the new Banner system. Students have participated too by attending “mock registration” sessions to help test the system and give feedback.

As we roll out the new system this semester, most current students will first use Banner for catalog course browsing and registration. Get ready for the added functionality of searching for courses by instructor and specific start and end times on specified days. Details about the transition, as well as a new registration start date, will be communicated in the coming weeks. We would appreciate your patience and support as we transition to the new system.

On the administrative side, Temple academic and faculty advisors are preparing to help students with their degree progress and course selections by attending training on the Banner Student system. In addition, Town Hall meetings and special Banner Previews were held to inform them of new processes and policy changes.

Work is also underway on incorporating the financial aid and billing processes into the Banner system. For students, TUportal will become the central place to access this information

In addition, Banner Advancement is scheduled to go live in February. Banner will replace Institutional Advancement's Millennium system and it includes a sophisticated set of performance management tools.

Looking ahead, we are excited by the prospect of offering new functionality once the Banner system is in place. For example, stay tuned for upcoming news on more information sharing across administrative areas and accessing a number of Temple resources via your mobile phone.

I hope you have a great semester.
