Middle School Science Program (Human Biology) - I, Bio

Those invited to join the BioQ Collaborative will do the following:

  1. Take part in the 2006 Summer Research Laboratories,
  2. Attend the Winter 2007 (January) Graduate Course "Learning and Teaching Human Biology,"
  3. Teach the middle school science curriculum I, Bio in your classroom during Winter 2007 (in coordination with the Graduate Course),
  4. Facilitate the BioQ Collaborative's research in your classroom.

Who Should Apply

CPS middle school science teachers with 2+ years experience and those from schools made up of mostly minority students are especially encouraged to apply.

When and Where

Summer Research Laboratories: July 10th - July 21st [Monday-Friday (10 days), 9 am - 3 pm], Northwestern University's School of Education and Biology laboratories (Evanston).
Graduate Course: Beginning January 2007 - 11 weeks [Tuesday 5 pm - 8 pm], Northwestern University's School of Education (Evanston).

Incentives for Participation

Participation in each of the following four components is essential for the BioQ Collaborative to understand the extent to which the curriculum and professional development help change student science achievement and attitudes.   Those who complete all four program components will receive 2 and 2/3 graduate credit hours for $250, a $1,500 stipend, 12 CEU's, and 3 Lane credits.   You will receive $500 at the end of the summer program component, and the remaining $1000 after completing the graduate coursework and returning the research materials for your students.

You will also receive all curriculum and software resources for your classroom AND access to content-related, pedagogical, and technology support during your enactment of the I, Bio curriculum from both CPS teachers who have previously taught this unit as well as university education researchers and scientists.
