Welcome to The Academic Metalsmith Website!
This site compliments a listserve of the same name, which
was born out of a newsletter created by Christina Parkin (a graduate student of Tyler
School of Art) in 1994. Acmet-l originated as a vehicle for metalsmiths, also involved in
academia, to discuss important issues. That publication is mailed to over 200 people in
colleges and universities all over the country. With the introduction of the listserve it
became easier to immediately correspond and communicate with our peers and contemporaries.
Now, by adding this web page to Acmet-l, we hope to further our endeavors by exposing you
to the work of students and professors from participating colleges.
The basic concern of Acmet-l is to be a forum for those involved in the discipline of
Metalsmithing. The listserve’s objective is to unite those involved in academia, for
the purpose of discussion and debate about our field. Students benefit the most, as they
are exposed to uncensored and unedited dialogue. Teachers are encouraged to participate
for their professional insights on teaching, philosophy, and current concerns. Both are
encouraged to join and actively participate on the listserve.
This Website is currently asking for submissions of student work to exhibit. To have your
work shown on Acmet-l you must be a professor from a college level academic metalsmithing
program. Send us slides of your work and the work of your students. All student work must
be approved by you and accompanied with a brief description of your program, and
philosophy. Your work will be presented as a submission and example of your academic
program. This is an exhibition, not a competition. Your work will serve to educate the
community, and make it accessible to virtually the whole world!
How to Subscribe
To be a part of the Acmet-l listserve, you need only
subscribe. To do so go to http://listserv.temple.edu/archives/acmet-l.html
and click on Join or leave list and apply, or send a message to listserv@listserv.temple.edu,
and in the body of the message type the following:
"sub acmet-l your name". You will receive a message that
you must respond to within 48 hours. If all goes well after replying, you will receive a
welcome letter from Acmet-l. It may take time to receive mail, depending on the frequency
of the debate at the time.
