To alleviate anxieties around a foodborne incident, local, state, and federal levels of government must demonstrate that an established, effective system is in place to prevent, respond to, and manage food safety incidents and foodborne outbreak investigations. To this end, this study is aimed to begin to better understand the roles and responsibilities of state health officials in the event of a foodborne outbreak. How a state Department of Health publicly responds to a major outbreak often sets the tone for the general population, and therefore, this study provides an important first step in better defining the important role of the state health official in the event of a foodborne incident.
