Department of Public Health Dr. Bass is an assistant professor of Public Health in the Temple University Department of Public Health in Philadelphia, PA. Areas of expertise include risk and health communication, especially as it relates to the uses of new technology by patient populations, program planning and human sexuality, especially in the areas of gender, reproductive technologies and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV. She recently finished a research project in which she was the Principal Investigator of a National Cancer Institute funded study researching the use of the Internet by newly diagnosed cancer patients who contact the Cancer Information Service. In the area of Preparedness research, Dr. Bass is developing a media readiness training for first responders in the event of a disaster and helping the city of Philadelphia develop public communication templates for different disaster scenarios. In addition, Dr. Bass has researched smallpox vaccination rates and healthcare worker attitudes about vaccination in Pennsylvania. This research, which applies a marketing technology called Perceptual Mapping, will help create new educational materials. Dr. Bass has presented at both the local and national level and published on the use of new technologies and their possible effects on patient behavior.
