Services for English language learners
The Conversation Partners program provides an opportunity for English language learners to practice speaking and listening in English. In a Conversation Partners session, students meet one-on-one with a Conversation Partner and have a conversation that allows them to practice English grammar and vocabulary, as well as to learn common cultural expressions and expectations. For more advanced students, Conversation Partners sessions can also be used to rehearse in-class presentations and to prepare for interviews.
The Conversation Partners service is open to all graduate and undergraduate students at Temple who identify as English Language Learners, as well as students enrolled in Access Temple and IELP.

The Language Lounge offers online workshops that give students an opportunity to explore topics related to language, writing, classroom communications, and academic culture. The workshops are self-paced — students can view them from home on their own time — and they include interactive discussion boards and written activities for further practice.
The workshops are open to all Temple University students who identify as English language learners. To participate, contact Liz Ursell to be added to the Language Lounge site on Canvas.
The Language Lounge hosts a series of multicultural events that celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity by offering opportunities for international students to engage with other Temple students who are interested in their language and culture.
Language Lounge events are open to all graduate and undergraduate students at Temple University, as well as students enrolled in IELP and the Access Temple program.
Several times a month, we host social events at which international students and Conversation Partners get together to meet new people and learn about new cultural topics, including:
- Game nights
- Language exchanges
- Discussion panels
- Movie nights at the Reel
- And more!
Approximately twice per semester, we organize trips to give international students a chance to experience Philadelphia and common American activities, including:
- Ice skating in Dilworth Park
- First Friday in Old City
- Fourth of July Parade
- Frisbee Golf at Fairmount Park
All upcoming events will be posted on this website, Facebook, and other social media. Students can sign up to receive bimonthly newsletters with registration information about upcoming events. To sign up, email Liz Ursell with “subscribe to listserv” in the subject line.
