Applying to Work as an Office Assistant

Office assistants are the first people students and faculty encounter when they enter the CLASS. Their primary responsibility is welcoming students and guiding them to the CLASS service that fits their needs. Office assistants are responsible for the following tasks:

Reception duties

  • Answering questions about CLASS policies, services, hours, etc.
  • Assisting students, telephone callers, and visitors
  • Transferring and directing phone calls and messages to staff
  • Informing administrators that appointments have arrived

Silent Computer Lab Management Duties

  • Troubleshooting basic Microsoft Office questions
  • Refilling paper and toner in lab printers
  • Clearing paper jams and trash

Office Duties

  • Photocopying commonly used forms and handouts
  • Managing resource checkouts to CLASS staff and students
  • Running errands to campus offices
  • Straightening lab bookshelves and office spaces
  • Assisting in other day-to-day tasks

We look for dependable people who demonstrate excellent attention to detail, as well as strong service, interpersonal, and communication skills. Familiarity with Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint are preferred, but not required.

Students from all departments are eligible to apply for office assistant positions in CLASS.

CLASS OAs earn $12/hour and have opportunities for advancement. CLASS OAs typically work 5-10 hours per week; the hours are flexible and can be scheduled around other obligations.
