Temple Law Scholars Program
Temple University’s Beasley School of Law and the Temple University College of Liberal Arts have created a program for exceptional students who plan on attending law school. The Temple Law Scholars Program provides an opportunity for outstanding students to gain provisional admission to Temple University’s Beasley School of Law at the same time they are accepted into the College of Liberal Arts. As Temple Law Scholars, students will spend their undergraduate years in Temple's Honors Program following the Liberal Arts major of their choice, after which they will enroll in Temple’s Beasley School of Law, leading to the degree of Juris Doctor.
This highly selective program provides an enriched undergraduate experience that prepares students for the challenges of law school and legal careers. Students enrolled in the Temple Law Scholars program benefit from special opportunities, such as:
participating as jurors or witnesses in the trial advocacy program at the Beasley School of Law
legal internships in and around the Philadelphia area
participating in the Mock Trial Team
joining Phi Alpha Delta (the national student pre-law society) and the College of Liberal Arts Pre-Law Society
attending special lectures and events
sitting in on law school classes
being mentored by faculty and alumni lawyers
In order to provide these unique educational opportunities, the program will be kept small. We anticipate that no more than 20 students per class will participate.
Admission
In order to be considered for the Temple Law Scholars Program, an applicant must be accepted into the Honors Program of the College of Liberal Arts. It is also expected that he or she should:
have a high class standing and above average SAT scores
submit a well-argued and well-written essay
have excellent letters of recommendation
possess above average maturity
have experience in community service and leadership positions
show a genuine interest in the legal profession and its value to society
Applying
Along with general Temple undergraduate admission application materials, students must submit a Temple Law Scholars application, an essay that responds to a specific topic assigned by the Temple Law Scholars Admissions Committee, and a letter of recommendation. An interview may be requested.
Applications received before March 1 will receive priority treatment by the Temple Law Scholars Admissions Committee. Applications must be received by April 1 to be considered.
Two Options
The Law Scholars Program offers two options:
4/3 Option: Enriched Experience – This option allows the student to have a full undergraduate experience. Upon successful completion of four years in the Honors Program, the student receives a Bachelor's Degree in his or her chosen major(s) within the College of Liberal Arts, and the law degree is awarded after three years of law school.
3/3 Option: Accelerated Experience – This option is an accelerated version of the program which allows the student to begin study at the Beasley School of Law after three years of undergraduate work while enrolled in the Honors program. The student receives a Bachelor's Degree in his or her chosen major(s) within the College of Liberal Arts after completion of the first year of law school, and the law degree is awarded after three years of law school. This option is designed primarily for the older student with considerable life experience.
Students in either program option can request a one-year deferral between college and law school in order to gain relevant work experience.
Program Requirements
There are certain academic and service requirements that Law Scholars students are expected to fulfill during their undergraduate years. These include:
satisfying all academic requirements of their degree program(s) and all entrance requirements for the School of Law.
satisfying all Honors program requirements and obtaining a letter of recommendation to the law school from the Honors Program Director.
earning a cumulative GPA of 3.4 (out of 4.0) and achieving a minimum score of 75 per cent on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).
completing a minimum of 50 hours of supervised community service during their junior or senior years of college and participating in a co-operative program in the legal field.
