Courses in Sustainability

Temple University Ambler is often referred to as the University’s green campus and with good reason. Learn why!

Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture

Horticulture includes the production, installation and management of plants as well as the development of plants for improved performance in the environment.

The horticulture bachelor degree has a strong scientific basis supplemented by a liberal arts education. Students experience actual hands-on courses that increase their practical horticulture knowledge and provide them with useful skills for the workplace. These courses include: plant identification, landscape design, plant propagation and landscape management. All courses emphasize sensitivity to environmental concerns and ecological soundness. Those dealing with disease, pest and weed control promote integrated pest management strategies utilized by environmentalists on a daily basis. Working on award winning Philadelphia Flower Show exhibits and producing plants for student plant sales also provide invaluable learning opportunities.

Landscape Architecture is an exciting profession in high demand. Landscape architects apply artistic and scientific principles to the planning, design, management, preservation, and rehabilitation of natural and built environments.

The roots of the profession can be traced to early settlement patterns by ancient cultures. In Western civilizations, notable traditions of landscape design are traced to classical gardens from the Italian Renaissance, the French baroque period, and 18th century England.
