Department Chair Handbook

SO……YOU’RE THE CHAIR!

Departmental Chairs are among the most important leaders in the College of Liberal Arts and Temple University.  They must juggle many tasks, all of them vital to the functioning of their departments and to the instructional mission of the University.  They are managers, and they are also leaders, setting the agenda for faculty recruitment, for scholarship and teaching, for curricular and program development, and for graduate study in the College.  Chairs have been entrusted by the Dean and by their departmental colleagues with the stewardship of their departments, and their effectiveness in this position will have a direct impact on the vitality of the College as a whole.

This Handbook offers a catalogue of useful information and resources to help Chairpersons carry out their responsibilities.  It provides contact information for Dean’s Office staff and University officers; it sets out the basic roles and responsibilities of the Chairs and provides detailed information on specific duties such as hiring of new faculty, contract renewal, tenure and promotion; and it offers information and links to College and University policies in a number of key areas relating to faculty and students.

Please note that University policies are outlined at http://policies.temple.edu and that these University policies supersede any CLA policies outlined in this handbook.
