Cancer and Health Disparities Research in Asian American populations


Grace X. Ma, Ph.D., Professor of Public Health, is founder and director of Center for Asian Health. The Center was established in 2000, one of the first in the nation dedicated to reducing cancer and other health disparities among Asian Americans. The Center’s programs provide a cultural bridge for underserved and uninsured through a community-based participatory model that incorporates multilevel effort in research, training, community health programs and clinics, and research dissemination.

Center for Asian Health provides research training opportunities for junior researchers interested in Asian health issues. The Asian Junior Investigator Training and Mentorship Program (AJITM) provides with training and mentorship in development of evaluation instruments, design of educational curricula, as well as in the conduct of community research activities that enhance career development through a variety of programs that include:

  • internships
  • research assistantships
  • academic mentorships
  • scholarships
  • predoctoral fellowships
  • postdoctoral fellowships or
  • volunteer involvement

Project Empower: Family violence in older African American women

Project Empower is an NIH funded study that is looking to examine the associations between lifetime exposure to family violence and health, through a grant awarded to Dr. Paranjape, an associate professor at the School of Medicine, Health Sciences Campus. Participants for this project are African American women over the age of 60, and will be recruited from the Temple Internal Medicine group practice, both in Jones Hall and the practice site on the 4th floor of Temple University Hospital, on the Health Sciences Campus. This project will allow a graduate level student who is interested in clinical research to gain research experience through experiences gained in the field. Study interviews will take place in the waiting room of each clinic and assessments will take place in a private room of the practice, on the same day.
