The Health Behavior Research Clinic HBRC Projects and PublicationsSecond-hand Smoke Treatment for Postpartum African American Smokers. This is an NIH/NCI-funded study testing the effectiveness of behavioral treatment for smoking in this underserved population. Key aims include improving child health outcomes, maternal quit smoking rates, access to treatment, and health systems linkages to promote better continuity of care between related provider groups. Collaborators include Drs. Janet Audrain-McGovern and E. Paul Wileto at the University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Melbourne Hovell at San Diego State University. Behavioral Mechanisms of Cue Exposure Treatment for Smoking Relapse Prevention: A Feasibility Trial with Bupropion. This HBRC project is a multidisciplinary, PA Department of Health-funded study designed to examine factors related to smoking relapse. Understanding factors that may be influenced by bupropion could improve our understanding of relapse and treatment components offered for individuals trying to quit smoking. Temple University collaborators on this study include Dr. Ralph Spiga (Psychiatry), Dr. Thomas Gould (Psychology), and Dr. Alexandra Hanlon (Public Health). Pediatric ENT Practices with Parental Smokers. This HBRC project includes a web-based survey for pediatric otolyngologists examining their current ETS-related practices and barriers to effective counseling of smoking parents. We are planning expansion of this study to other subspecialties that deal with tobacco-related illness. FRESH Head Start. This project is an extension of the Philadelphia FRESH program, but targets low income smokers in the Pottsville, PA, area to test the feasibility and efficacy of linking behavioral health services (FRESH) to Head Start, an established, government-subsidized program that could facilitate access to services in underserved communities. This project is run in collaboration with the Clinical Outcomes Group (Dr. David Zanis). Pediatric Obesity Geographic Information Systems (POGIS) Project. This project aims to improve our understanding of individual-level and community built environment factors that influence pediatric overweight and obesity. This project is running in collaboration with the Temple Pediatrics Research Group (Drs. Collins, Brian Daly, Andrea McCoy, Brook Belay, Dione Cash, Denise Salerno, and graduate and medical students). Breastfeeding and Postpartum Smoking Relapse. This HBRC pilot study examines relationships between breastfeeding and postpartum smoking. Skin Savvy Study: A Skin Cancer Prevention Intervention. This is an NIH/NCI-funded project funded to Fox Chase Cancer Center (Carolyn Heckman, Ph.D., PI). Participants are recruited at area colleges, including Temple University, and provided a behavioral intervention at the HBRC. The primary aim of this study is the comparison of procedures designed to reduce skin cancer risk by promoting skin protection behavior in high risk individuals. College Student Situational Smoking: Trajectories and Cessation Barriers. This study is funded by the American Society of Preventive Oncology, and is run by Dr. Amy Lazev at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. The HBRC is assisting Dr. Lazev in recruiting college smokers at Temple University. HBRC Publications and Presentations Brandon, TH, Collins, BN, Juliano, LM, & Lazev, AB. (2000).
