Shannon P. Márquez, MEng, PhD
Associate Professor & Director
Master of Public Health (MPH) Program

Dr. Shannon Márquez is an Associate Professor of Public Health and the new Director of the Master of Public Health Program in the Department of Public Health at the Temple University College of Health Professions. She earned her PhD in environmental health sciences from The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Public Health, a master’s in environmental engineering from Texas A&M University, and a BS from Prairie View A&M University in Texas.

Prior to joining Temple University, she was on the faculty in Environmental and Occupational Health, the Center for Infectious Diseases, and the program in Global Health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health; and previously served as Assistant Dean for Diversity at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, as well as Deputy Director of the Center for International Rural and Environmental Health, and the Director of Community Outreach & Education for the NIH-NIEHS funded Center of Excellence at The University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Her research focus is in global health and development, safe water issues, agricultural health, human rights and environmental justice. In addition to her current role training students in public health practice at Temple, she participates in a number of international and environmental health training initiatives in West Africa and the US, and holds international academic appointments on The University of The Gambia Faculty of Medicine and at The Gambia College School of Public Health in West Africa where she previously directed a rigorous research, exchange, and training program (from 2000-2005) funded by the US Department of State, the NIH Fogarty International Center, and Pioneer Foundation—for health sciences, medicine, and nursing students from US institutions who traveled abroad to complete fieldwork and clinical rotations in international health; and public health officers and physicians from West Africa who traveled to the US for short-term, intermediate, and graduate level training at US schools of public health. She has been invited to lecture on topics related to her research and training activities at institutions and conferences worldwide, including Senegal, The Gambia, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the US and Sweden.

Currently, her research is on the development of risk assessment and GIS models to evaluate sanitary risk factors and water related diseases; the implementation of household-based water treatment and safe storage schemes in sub-Saharan Africa; partnerships for community-driven health research to address environmental justice in underserved communities; and access to water and sanitation, and environmental improvements of the SAFE Strategy to eliminate trachoma disease—one of the world’s leading causes of preventable blindness, that persists where people live in poverty with crowded living conditions and where the basic infrastructure for water, sanitation, and waste disposal is lacking.

Dr. Márquez has served as a member of several professional organizations, editorial boards, and peer-review panels, including the American Public Health Association, the Society for Risk Analysis, and the American Water Works Association, the USEPA National Center for Environmental Research, the NIH National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, and the Journal for Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.
