PH 2215 Special Populations: Strategic Community Outreach
About the Course

This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts and models of strategic community outreach as it pertains to the special population communities, within the context of emergency management planning, response, and recovery. It will assist health care and allied health professionals, public health professionals, and emergency responders to understand how accessible information and technology is part of the community outreach strategy
The course will enable students to meet identified core competencies of emergency preparedness for public health and emergency professionals which include; functional roles, resource identification, problem solving, and appropriate response.
Students will utilize problem based learning by analyzing actual and scenario based disaster events and applying the theories, principals, and practice of strategic community outreach pertaining to emergency response and recovery. In addition, students will learn about the issues faced by special population communities and how to address these special needs in all hazard response and recovery.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the different population groups that are included in the special population community.
- Explain the structure and design of a strategic community outreach implementation plan.
- Understand the importance of accessible information and technology and how it relates to the trusted source of information concept.
- Apply outreach strategies with a broad range of special population communities and coordinating those strategies with emergency operation groups.
- Learn techniques for recovery facilitation and promoting disaster resilience.
- Define the issues of special populations in emergency response and recovery.
- Apply actual best practices and lessons learned in a functional and virtual tabletop exercise.
