Exercise and Sport Science

Exercise and Sport Science has been a program option in the Department of Kinesiology for more than 30 years.  In that time the program has grown and developed into a vital and dynamic area of study and many rewarding professional applications.  The exercise and sport scientist understands the complexity of the human body and the interaction among physical activity, exercise and good health.  The improved function, health, and well-being of the total person-Body, Mind, and Spirit are the ultimate goals of professionals in this field.

The exercise scientist applies their knowledge, skills, and beliefs to all people regardless of gender, age, social status, and current health-related fitness level or disease state. Wherever there is a need to improve functional ability, health-fitness, medical prognosis, optimal aging, or wellness, one will find an exercise scientist providing leadership in programs that help individuals optimize their lives and health.  In summary, exercise science is a stimulating area of study and a rewarding professional application with a very bright future.

Successful graduates can enter the workplace in a variety of professional settings.  Commonly, graduates seek out professional opportunities as a Health-Fitness Specialist working in community or corporate fitness and wellness programs.  Others pursue roles as an Exercise Specialist working in the hospital or clinical setting with high risk or clients with know diseases like heart disease or obesity. Many students become Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and work with college, university, varsity and profession sports teams in an important area known as sports specific, peak performance training.

The Department of Kinesiology offers two programs in Exercise and Sport Science at the undergraduate level.  Both programs prepare the student with a bachelor’s degree for the professions. Option 2, is intended for the student going on into a Master’s degree program where core science are prerequisites.
