The Doctoral Degree Program in Athletic Training


Mission Statement

The graduate program is committed to advancing the profession of Athletic Training by developing the faculty of reason and critical thinking skills of NATA/BOC certified athletic trainers, who are empowered to become leaders in their field by evaluating accepted clinical practice, conducting scientific inquiries, creating, disseminating and clinically applying new knowledge from research that enhances proficiency in sports injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of physically active populations.

The Doctoral Degree Program

The Doctoral degree program in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine is designed for National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Certified Athletic Trainers and/or other qualified health care professionals. The purpose of the program is to develop the skills of these clinical specialists in order to advance the profession in research and leadership. The Kinesiology, Research, and Athletic Training core courses provide the training necessary to develop research specialists in the field of athletic training/sports medicine. The elective courses available in our program allow students to specialize in the discipline of their choice.


Candidates pursuing a Doctoral degree in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine should have research interests/experience in one of the following areas:
1. Brain Injury Prevention
-Biomechanics
-Protein Assays
-Genetics
2. Neuropsychological Influences on the Sensory-Motor Control System
-Biomechanics
3. Evidence-based practice in athletic training and sports medicine with particular focus on interventions to
reduce unintentional injuries and post-surgical outcomes
