Kids Write and Create is a collaboration between the North Star After-School Outreach Program at the Frederick Douglass Elementary School and students from two departments at Temple University, Communication Sciences and Disorders and Public Health. 

Kids Write and Create is designed to help young children develop strong reading and writing skills, make healthy choices and develop confidence in themselves. 

Kids Write and Create provides individual Temple “book buddies” from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for students in the North Star after-school program (K-2) at the Douglass Elementary School in North Philadelphia. Through coursework, the Temple buddies are trained in spoken and written language development. Buddy activities include reading books, writing short books on topics of interest to the children, learning strategies for staying healthy and creating posters and flyers about healthy living. Health lessons are provided by students and staff from the Department of Public Health.
