Professor Robert Levis Research Interests
Strong Field Chemistry
Levis pioneered the area of strong field chemistry, the use of ultrafast and intense lasers to modify, manipulate and detect virtually any molecular system. This work employs lasers having electric field strength of magnitude equal to the forces binding atoms into molecules to reprogram specific characteristics of molecular. Recent work combines strong laser fields with adaptive control to develop novel photonic chemistries. This work has applications in the detection of chemical warfare agents, developing novel materials processing methods (e.g. dentistry) and in biophotonics (e.g. deep tissue cancer detection).
