Dr. Cohen is currently Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine and Richard Leylord Evans, Professor of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine. This is the 14th year of this appointment making him the Senior Chair in the United States. Dr. Cohen plays a key role in leading a complex department of 90 faculty and 150 residents and fellows. The Department is at the cutting edge of health care with complex clinical programs in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, nephrology and Pulmonary Medicine. The Department has highly successful clinical and research programs in liver, kidney, heart, lung and bone marrow transplantation. He is instrumental in resident training with one of the best U.S. programs based upon national performance standards. Dr. Cohen plays an important role as Assistant Vice President in community health care integration and managed care programs. Dr. Cohen maintains an active practice and clinical educational program as a gastroenterologist. He is editor of major textbooks and journals in Gastroenterology. He continues to write important articles and editorials on gastrointestinal diseases such as esophageal adenocarcinoma. The latter editorial in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine focused extensive attention on this malignancy, the fastest growing cancer in the USA.
Dr. Cohen also plays an important leadership role in American medicine as President of the Association of Professors of Medicine, the organization of the 125 Chairs of medicine of each medical school. This position brings national attention to Temple. Dr. Cohen, as President, sets the pace and tone for medical education and training for the country dealing with Congress and health care regulation.
Dr. Cohen continues to lead the Department of Medicine during one of the most difficult and unpredictable phases of health care and medical education. The Department is one of the most successful in the country.
