To the University Community

In addition to the "199 day" Plan endorsed by the Board of Trustees covering the University’s agenda until June 30, 2000, I have consulted with the Board and made three decisions on major University administrative appointments during that period. They are:

  1. No new "permanent" Officers will be elected. For Provost, this means that Corrinne A. Caldwell will continue as Acting Provost, and the Search Committee’s work will be held in abeyance until a new President is elected and is briefed on this matter, at which point s(he) can determine whether to continue with the present search or to begin a new one.

  2. A "permanent" Dean of the College of Science and Technology will be appointed to consolidate Carnegie Research I advances of the past year; a search process will begin in late January.

  3. A "Director" (or possibly a "Dean") will be appointed for the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management to insure leadership in its early development; the search is in process.

Additionally, I consulted with the Board on another "transition" issue, and now remind everyone that our policy prohibits the attempt to transform or appoint or otherwise place an administrator into a full-time faculty position (for 2000-01 or beyond). Those practices creep into some universities in periods of presidential transition, but they violate long-standing Temple policy which all Deans and Officers are required to enforce.

With best wishes for good health and happiness in 2000,

Peter J. Liacouras
