Community Programs

The timely utilization of proven beneficial interventions and their transfer to other communities is as important as the concept of 'ownership' in community-based participatory research. Center for Asian Health involvement of more than 80 partners of community organizations, research institutions, and hospitals and community health clinics in the research enterprise has facilitated accessibility and navigation of patients through critical phases of healthcare, reducing the time lag between diagnosis and primary and secondary intervention. Since its establishment in 2000, the Center has pursued the goal of building bridges between its varied Asian ethnic / cultural communities and the healthcare system by eliminating multiple barriers that impede the delivery of healthcare particularly through the participation of multilingual and multicultural Center staff and clinical health provider partners. The Center's experience to date shows a trend toward sustainability of effort in these communities as well as indications of a parallel trend in reduction of certain health disparities, reflected notably in increases in the numbers of participants in tobacco cessation programs, screening and treatment for hepatitis B, cancer and other chronic disease screenings and interventions.

Examples of Center's evidence-based community health programs that have shown potential sustainability and that have had some measurable impact on disparity health issues are cited below. These programs address health information dissemination, primary and secondary prevention education, clinical intervention, and training, among others.
