Memorandum

To:

All Temple Students

From:

Anthony E. Wagner, Senior Vice President, CFO

Date:

July 17, 2009

Subject:

Important Billing Announcement

I wanted to bring you up-to-date on the recent action Temple University has taken to meet the changing state budget situation.

Temple University’s Board of Trustees Executive Committee on July 16 decided to hold its 2009-2010 tuition increase to a historically low 2.9 percent with a provision to revise tuition later based on the final Commonwealth appropriation. Pennsylvania has not yet passed its budget for the current fiscal year or its appropriation for Temple. There are proposals to reduce Temple’s Commonwealth appropriation well below what was anticipated when the tuition rate was set.

This decision means Temple’s tuition increase remains among the lowest of public schools in Pennsylvania, with the University of Pittsburgh at 2.9 percent and the State System of Higher Education schools at 3.7 percent. The Pennsylvania State University announced an increase ranging from 3.7 to 4.5 percent depending on campus location and residency status.

We understand the dire financial position facing the state, but we are also concerned about the economic reality for our students and families. We appreciate your patience during these extraordinary times.  Our staff is ready to assist you with any other information that you may require.

"Temple schools and colleges that have differential tuition may have increases higher than 2.9 percent."
