Course Numbering System
All undergraduate course numbers were changed, effective first Summer Session 2007. The old course numbers appear throughout this publication in parentheses, unless otherwise noted. For more details on course renumbering, go to the Course Renumbering web site at http://renumbering.temple.edu. The "Course Menu" option on the Course Renumbering web site provides a searchable database of courses with their old and new numbers.
The new course numbers follow specific guidelines:
07xx: Preparatory courses.
08xx: General Education courses.
09xx: Honors General Education courses.
1xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their first year of study.
2xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their second year of study.
3xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their third year of study.
4xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.
5xxx: Courses primarily for graduate students; however, undergraduate students in their third or fourth year may enroll in such courses with permission.
Honors courses have a “9” as the second digit (x9xx) and their titles contain the word “Honors.”
Writing Intensive courses end in “96,” “97” and “98.”
General Education (GenEd) courses are numbered “08xx”; the GenEd Honors courses are numbered “09xx”. GenEd courses are also identified by the Required Course Identifier (RCI). GenEd courses can be found by selecting the “View General Education Courses Only” option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.
Core courses are identified by their RCI. Core courses can also be found by selecting the "Core Requirements" option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.
The abbreviations
and symbols used in these course descriptions are as follows:
F Course offered in the fall semester.
S Course offered in the spring semester.
SS Course offered in a summer session.
s.h. Indicates the semester hours (credits) given for satisfactorily completing the course.
$ Indicates that additional fees are likely for the course.
RCI Required Course Identifier. The RCI identifies which GenEd or Core requirement(s) a course fulfills.

Letters in old course numbers:
C satisfies a requirement in one of the University Core Curriculum areas except Studies in Race and Writing-Intensive.
H is a University Honors course. Old course numbers in the 0090's or 0190's were Honors Core courses.
R satisfies the Studies in Race requirement, and may also satisfy another Core Curriculum requirement.
W counts toward satisfying the Core Curriculum's writing requirement.
X satisfies a requirement in one of the Core areas, and also counts toward satisfying the Core Writing-Intensive requirement.
University General Education (GenEd) Curriculum
Note: Transfer students admitted prior to Fall 2010 follow the Core Curriculum requirements.
If you are a new freshman in the Fall 2008 or after, you will be taking courses in a new program called General Education, or GenEd.
Temple faculty and administration have been at work for years on this new program, and here's why -- as the 21st century advances, the amount of information available to us and the speed with which we can access information continues to expand at a stunning pace. We exist in a virtual storm of information. GenEd is a response to this reality: it redefines what it means to be an educated person. In a world where no one can hope to know it all, the best way to prepare for the future is to learn how information is linked and how pieces of information are interrelated. GenEd is about making connections.
In our GenEd classes we draw connections between academic knowledge and current controversies. Whether it's understanding digital mapping, the causes of poverty in Philadelphia or global climate change, GenEd classes will involve cutting edge issues.
Many GenEd courses make connections between the classroom, the city of Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia region. Temple is embedded in a dynamic urban environment, providing a fascinating context for learning. An art course will take you to museums, dance performances and to historic buildings to see battle re-enactments. An education course will make you an active participant in local schools and community centers. An environmental science course will take you to a 19th century sewage treatment plant now restored as The Waterworks. In these and many other ways, GenEd will mix your coursework with more vibrant experience of the city and the region, ultimately giving you a sense of Philadelphia's connections to the world.
GenEd courses also feature connections across different academic disciplines. Study Shakespeare through literature, dance and music. Look at film from the perspectives of race, gender and ethnicity. Learn about sustainable design by blending geology, landscape architecture and moral philosophy. GenEd courses encourage you to develop the ability to view complex problems through multiple lenses.
The GenEd curriculum transformation has attracted many of Temple's finest faculty with a deep investment in developing and refining dozens of innovative courses. They are committed to teaching them, and to making GenEd an outstanding learning experience.
The GenEd curriculum introduces you to nine areas of learning and a total of eleven courses. The tables below demonstrate the areas and the total number of courses required in each area.

^The number of credits each individual student must complete to satisfy certain Core areas may be dependent upon placement test results and course selections.
Each Core area has a list of courses approved as satisfying the requirements for that area. The two-letter Required Course Identifier (RCI) provides information on the Core requirement that a given course will meet. Click here for a listing of all Core RCIs.
For a full description of the Core Curriculum, the 45+ Core Curriculum, Core policies, descriptions of the Core areas, and other Core-related information, see the Core Curriculum section of the Undergraduate Bulletin at www.temple.edu/bulletin/Academic_programs/core/generalinfo/core_generalinfo.shtm.
Students required to complete any version of the Core Curriculum can use GenEd courses to satisfy the Core equivalent area. See below.

*Transfer students admitted to Temple in Fall 2010 and after follow the GenEd program.
**All General Education course numbers begin with "08XX"; all General Education Honors courses begin with "09XX."
***Beginning Fall 2008, English 1002: College Composition (CO); English 1012: College Composition ESL (CO); English 1022: College Composition (RC); and English 1977: Honors Introduction to Literature & Composition (CO/HO) will no longer be offered. Choose from the GW (English 0802, 0812, or 0902: Analytical Reading & Writing) sections to complete your Core Composition requirement.
****Beginning Fall 2008, Intellectual Heritage 1196 (IA), Intellectual Heritage 1297 (IB), Intellectual Heritage1996 (IA/HO), and Intellectual Heritage 1997 (IB/HO) will no longer be offered. Honors students who have completed Intellectual Heritage 1996 and still need to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1997 requirement can complete Mosaic 0951 or 0952.
^^GQ courses can be used to satisfy either QA or QB Core requirements; however, students required to complete the Core Curriculum must complete a total of two courses to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning requirement.
Core Course Eliminations
Starting Fall 2008 several Core courses will no longer be offered at Temple University (excluding the Japan campus). Core students can use the new GenEd replacement courses to satisfy the corresponding Core area.
If you previously completed one of these Core courses and would like to replace the grade, you will need to either complete the course during Summer 2008 OR take the designated GenEd substitute.
Students who have earned credit for one or more of the Core courses listed cannot earn additional credit for the corresponding GenEd course (with the exception of Mosaic and GenEd Math courses). For example, a student who completed English 1002 (C050) cannot earn additional credits for English 0802 or English 0812.
Notes:
GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy multiple Core areas; GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy Core Writing Intensive requirements.
All 0900 level courses are part of the Honors program; students must be in Temple's Honors program to register for those courses.
Information in the table does NOT apply to new freshmen, who must use General Education courses to fulfill their General Education requirements.
For details about the eliminated Core courses and their GenEd substitutes, please click here. For information about other Core Updates, go to the Core Update web site at www.temple.edu/vpus/ucc/core_update.htm.
