0241. Teaching Keyboarding (3 s.h.) F

Prerequisite: Typewriting ability. Psychology of skill development and development of effective teaching techniques including teaching the handicapped. Textbooks are evaluated, lessons presented, and student evaluations prepared. Simulated presentations videotaped.

0313. Microcomputer Applications (3 s.h.) S

Designed to enable the preservice business teacher to use computer applications in the classroom. Emphasis is on the use of data bases, test generation and analyses, graphics, and relevant business-oriented applications. Microprocessors and/or terminals provide adequate hands-on experiences.

0082. Personal and Educational Development Skills (3 s.h.) FS

For students first entering college who are enrolled in special programs. An introductory course to develop personal and educational development skills. Basic communication, decision-making and problem solving skills as well as examining written language and basic reading skill. Small group discussions, role playing, and audiovisual modalities.

0138. Child Abuse and Sex Exploitation (3 s.h.) FS

Based on facts revealed by the enactment of national and state child protection legislation. Psychosocial determinants; approaches to prevention and treatment; and a review of federal and state legislation with respect to individual responsibility.

0181. Introduction to Counseling Psychology (3 s.h.) FS

A lecture-laboratory course providing an overview of the field of counseling psychology as well as the role and function of the counselor in community and educational settings. Basic theories and principles of the counseling process and practice of beginning counseling skills.

0182. Interviewing Techniques (3 s.h.) FS

For nonmajors. The theory and techniques of interviewing, especially as they apply to problems of educational, vocational, and social counseling, rehabilitation, and employment.

0340. Counseling the Victim (3 s.h.) FS

An in-depth study of the victims of violent crime; e.g. child (physical and sexual) abuse; rape; assault (spouse, partner, aging parent), etc. Focus is on the predictable psychological reactions of crime victims; on counseling the crime victim(s); the legal and ethical responsibilities of those in the "helping" professions, and prevention/intervention considerations. Course format includes lectures, discussion, films, and guest presentations.

Presents an interdisciplinary analysis of education and schooling in the United States, examining how educational policy has been shaped in the U.S.; what important roles certain individuals, institutions and social groups have played in this process; how educational policies have had differential impact on various groups. Enables students to study and critically evaluate schools as a significant social institution within the framework of American values and institutions.

R065. Race and Racism in U.S. Education (3 s.h.) (RS, WI) F

Examines the historical, sociological, and ideological dimensions of race and racism in education; explores the impact of the influence of racism in the larger society on specific schooling practices related to institutional racism.

0110. Science and Art of Teaching (4 s.h.) FS

Prerequisites: Composition C050 and Psychology 0050 or equivalent. Various theories as a framework for considering the science and art of teaching with emphasis on classroom-based research. Accompanied by a practicum in which students tutor and observe teacher behavior in schools. Students must obtain a C+ or better for admission into a certification- program.

Pre-or Corequisite: Education 0110. Development of selected planning and presentation skills, as well as the ability to reflect on a teaching episode. Conducted in the Teaching Skills Laboratory. Students must obtain a C+ or better for admission into a certification program.

0121. Lifespan Human Development (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: Psychology 0050 or equivalent. Corequisite: Education 0132. From the prenatal period through the lifespan. The relationship of developmental facts, concepts, and principles to the educational process.

0151. Multicultural/Multigroup Relations (3 s.h.) FS

Becoming knowledgeable and understanding of the values, customs, beliefs, contributions, and historical background of various target groups. Increasing sensitivity to the issues involved in a variety of movements. Acquiring methods and techniques for effectively teaching students to understand, relate to, and accept diverse groups.

0152. Teaching Exceptional Children (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: Education 0110. Psychological and educational factors relative to exceptional individuals including the mentally retarded, gifted, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, impaired, and speech defective. Knowledge useful to classroom teachers instructing mainstreamed exceptional children.

0153. Assessment and Evaluation of Learners (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: Education 0111 or equivalent. Evaluation and diagnosis of student learning needs. Students plan, construct, administer, and analyze a diagnostic achievement test in a given content area. Standardized tests frequently encountered by classroom teachers and other diagnostic techniques.

Those mathematical ideas of particular significance in elementary and secondary school curricula: the development and introduction of Hindu-Arabic numerals, early computing devices, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, etc. Ways in which history of mathematics may be used to enhance the learning of mathematical concepts by young students.

Behavioral skills for group interactions in any number of role settings: peer teaching, resident assistants, academic advising, ombudspersons, orientation leaders, etc. Student development theory, personal growth, and acquisition of helping skills.

0201. Organizational and Leadership Skills Seminar (1-4 s.h.) FS

Theories of organizational structure as they apply to university groups within which students participate. Development of change strategies which would help student leaders be more effective in their various roles.

0202. Interpersonal Skill Development I (2 s.h., course meets for half semester) FS

Most work environments require effective communication skills. Seminar provides training that stresses listening, interviewing, support, and group process skills.

0280. Independent Study (1-3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. For students who desire to work on individual projects under supervision.

0307. Interaction Analysis (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: Upper level undergraduate standing, or permission of instructor. The Flanders System of Interaction Analysis is an objective means of analyzing professional interaction. This system helps to crystallize, sensitize, and humanize interaction for prospective teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses, supervisors, administrators, and persons planning for leadership, management, or service roles. The impact of personal behavior and attitude; sensitivity in classroom, group, one-to-one, and personal interactions; behavior skills necessary to get results. Role playing, microteaching, and skill building exercises.

0312. Introduction to Group Dynamics (3 s.h.) FS

Participation in a task group; an opportunity to give and receive feedback about individual and group behavior. Theory and research on leadership, norms, group emotionality, cohesiveness, and manipulation in groups.

0313. Analysis of Group Participation (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite: PEP 0312. Participation in an ongoing human relations training group. Analysis of the group process as the group develops and faces issues which influence its functioning.

A fundamental view of science recommended for the student who would like to enter a scientific field but lacks adequate background. A two semester sequence. Important chemical phenomena and their explanations. Development and use of chemical theories and the mathematical skills needed in their use. Colisted with Chemistry C051-C052.

For in-service and prospective teachers K-12 who need to strengthen their physical science knowledge. Appropriate topics from physics, chemistry, and astronomy.

0362. Ecology and Field Biology for Teachers (3 s.h.) S

For in-service and prospective teachers K-12. Principles and examples of ecology. The Schuylkill Valley Nature Center is used for field work investigating topics such as population, succession, and food chains.

0364. Environmental Science for Teachers (3 s.h.)

0365. Meteorology for Teachers (3 s.h.) S (odd-numbered years)

The facts of meteorology, forecasting, and climatic studies as a science. Discussions, field trips, laboratory exercises, and films. Guest speakers review current work in meteorology. The planetary nature of the science.

Prerequisites: Education 0121 and General Studies Science requirement. An introductory, activity-oriented approach to materials and methodology appropriate to teaching science in kindergarten through sixth grade. 0355. The Teaching of Science (Preservice) (3 s.h. each) S

For students beginning their classes in science teaching at the secondary level. Science Education 0355 is taken concurrently with student teaching. Role of science education in the secondary curriculum, and sources of material and content for teaching physical, biological, and earth sciences. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

A supervised on-the-job learning experience supplemented by periodic on-campus seminars. Academic credit can be earned if the student's job is related to either his or her field of study or occupational goal and consists of at least 200 hours on the job. Seminar focuses on issues pertinent to job effectiveness.

W371. Reading Problems in the Secondary School (3 s.h.) FS

Three related components of reading problems: language (i.e., printed English); key concepts (including special vocabularies); critical thinking in the content areas (English, social studies, science). Must be admitted to the Certification program.

Opportunity to pursue special topics in the area of multilingual/multicultural education or to develop an in-depth project designed to meet personal and program objectives.

Introductory course in special education. Emphasis on psychological and educational factors relative to individuals labeled as mentally retarded, gifted, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, hearing-impaired, or speech defective.

0310. Learning Environments (3 s.h.) FS

The major social forces that present the context in which individuals with disabilities learn. The influence of the family, school, social agencies, the media, courts, laws, and social trends such as deinstitutionalization as they affect the learning environment. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0311. Managing Learning Environments (3 s.h.) FS

A range of alternative management techniques appropriate for facilitating learning in classrooms, families, and other environments. Students are required to implement a number of management techniques. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0312. Methods and Curriculum (3 s.h.) FS

An introduction to the diagnostic and remediation processes required in the education of individuals with disabilities at a variety of age levels. Particular emphasis on the basic school subjects. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0321. Social, Emotional, and Physical Development (3 s.h.) FS

The first of a two-course sequence focusing on the developmental characteristics of individuals with disabilities. The nature, developmental problems, assessment, and educational intervention of physical, perceptual motor, and socio-emotional problems. Field application including observations, interviews, and trial intervention. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0322. Cognition, Language, and Literacy (3 s.h.) FS

The following aspects of language and cognitive development: nature and theory, normal acquisition and development, problems in development, assessment, and intervention strategies. An attempt to link theory and practice. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0390. Practicum in Special Education (3 s.h.) FS

Prerequisite for Special Education students with no background in education. Precedes Special Education 0391. Practicum meets half days during the regular semesters and full days in the summer. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

Prerequisite: Special Education 390. Practica for full-time students. For education majors who have completed 390 and all other program requirements.

0271. Student Teaching: N-6 (3-15 s.h.) FS

Prerequisites: Completion of Early Childhood/Elementary Education sequence and a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Students admitted to student teaching only after their records and potential for success have been reviewed by the program faculty. Students will work under the guidance of cooperating teachers and Temple supervisors.

For the prospective vocational teacher and technical trainer. An in-depth analysis of contemporary secondary and vocational school vocational programs. Emphasis on the development of a philosophy of vocational education; on the identification of problems in present programs; on the role of research in effecting curricular change. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0102. Methods in Vocational/Technical Education (3 s.h.) FS

Development of specified teaching competencies. Training in affecting instructional outcomes in vocational areas; use of the instructional outcomes to prepare and present model content lessons; evaluation of the outcomes of instruction; and use of instructional technology. Must be admitted to the Certification program.

0103. Curriculum in Vocational/Technical Educational (3-6 s.h.) FS

Methods to develop vocational/technical curriculum. Analysis of an occupation in terms of tasks performed and preparation of valid terminal performance objectives to determine scope and sequence.

0214. Field Experience (1-6 s.h.) FS

Evaluation of field work, shop, and laboratory content courses, and other in-service work which will contribute to the student's field of specialization.

Prerequisites: Vocational/Technical Education and specialization core, a 2.0 overall average and 2.0 average in program concentration, Education 0110 and 0111. Student teaching in Philadelphia and suburban high schools under supervision. An individual conference after each observation.

0324. Cooperative Vocational/Technical Education (3 s.h.) FS

Organization and administration of vocational cooperative education programs to include types of programs, values, related instruction, program standards, evaluation, legal requirements, and youth organizations.

0326. Foundations of Vocational/Technical Education (3 s.h.) FS

Principles underlying vocational, technical, and industrial education; an integral part of the total program in public education; origins and evolution of the principles as a response to social, economic, and cultural change.

0350. Student Leadership Programs in Vocational/Technical Education (3 s.h.) FS

Educational values of the various vocational-technical student organizations as well as other student leadership activities.

0399. Supervised Work Experience (1-6 s.h.) FS

Practical experience to supplement classroom instruction. Individualized training plan developed for each student. Staff visitations and joint supervision on site.
