Prerequisite: Permission for nonmajors. Introduction to the use of drugs in clinical practice. Common categories of drugs analyzed in relation to actions and side effects. Drug dosages and nursing considerations.

Prerequisite: Nonmajors with good working knowledge of medical terminology and permission of instructor. An introductory course to coding the International Classification of Disease, 9th RevisionÑClinical Modification. Appropriate for both the beginning coder and the experienced coder who wishes to learn ICD-9-CM through formal study.
0002. Construction of Medical Terms (2 s.h.) FS For nonmajors. An approach to understanding the language of medicine through analysis of the component parts of medical terms.
0003. Medical Terminology (3 s.h.) FS For nonmajors. A survey of medical and anatomical terminology, including definitions, word construction, and analysis of disease, operative procedures, laboratory, diagnostic, and treatment terms, and abbreviations as reflected in medical documentation.
0004. Intermediate Medical Terminology (2 s.h.) FS
Prerequisite: HIM 0003 or working knowledge of medical terminology. Complementary course to HIM 0003. Specialized terms of surgery, pharmacology, oncology, clinical laboratory, radiology, obstetrics, and physical medicine/rehabilitation.
0005. Intermediate Coding (3 s.h.) FS
Prerequisite: HIM 0001 or good working knowledge of basic principles of ICD-9-CM. A continuation of HIM 0001, addressing more complex problems, with emphasis on the classification of obstetrics, injuries, and neoplasms according to the International Classification of Disease, 9th RevisionÑClinical Modification.

Prerequisites: Level I & II Core Mathematics. Analysis of historical and current patterns of health care organization; analysis of role and environment of health professionals within the changing pattern of health care.

Prerequisite: Biology 0233 and 0234 or Physical Education 0100 and 0101. The language of medicine and health care, including anatomical terminology, definitions, word construction, word analysis, and application.
0105. Legal Aspects of Health Information Management (3 s.h.) S
Prerequisites: HIM 106 and 141. Survey of federal, state, and local laws and regulations as they pertain to health information management; includes reportable conditions and diseases, release of information and client access to records. Three hours lecture.
0106. Health Information Systems in Acute Care (4 s.h.) F Corequisite: HIM 0141. Introduction to the health information data base: its development, content, format, value, and use. In-depth study of standards of documentation; quantitative and qualitative analysis of the health record. Survey of identification systems, storage and retrieval systems, preservation and retention of records; includes laboratory component.
0107. Computer Applications for Health Information Processing (3 s.h.) F Introduction to computer applications including DOS, word processing, spreadsheet, database management systems and file express, and graphics. Two hours lecture and two hours lab.
0109. Fundamentals for Health Information Processing (2 s.h.) S Juniors
Prerequisites: HIM 0107 or permission of instructor. Data communications; basic theory of computer operations; historical developments; factors in selecting computer hardware and software for health information systems. Two hours lecture.
0118. Computers in Health Care (2 s.h.) FS
This course will introduce the novice to the computer; what it is, what it does, what it can and cannot do. The impact of computers in todayÕs health care environment is the primary focus of the course. No student programming is required.

Prerequisite: HIM 0161. Aspects of personnel policies and practices; including recruitment, selection, training, and development, performance appraisal, benefits programs, unionization. Emphasis on situations encountered in management of health information services.

Pre- or Corequisites: HIM 0103, 0106, 0141. Orientation to the health information department in affiliated institutions; application, under supervision, of technical aspects of medical information management in the acute care hospital setting.
0183. Clinical Affiliation II (2 s.h.) S
Prerequisite: 0181; Pre- or Corequisites: HIM 0205. A continuation of HIM 0181 in the acute care hospital setting. Emphasis on functions of the ancillary and administrative services, and hospital sponsored programs; SPU, home care, hospice, psychiatric, drug/alcohol units, respite care, emergency care, "step down" units. Practicum: six hours per day, once a week for eight weeks. 0202. Current Topics in Health Information Management ( 3 s.h.) S
Corequisite: Final semester standing. Seminar to integrate the discrete skills and knowledge of the professional curriculum into a meaningful whole by student analysis of real and hypothetical problems.
0203. Registries and Classifications Systems (2 s.h.) F
Prerequisites: HIM 0103, 0106, and 0141. Pre- or Corequisite: HIM 0207, HIM 0271, and HIM 0274. Principles of severity of illness classification systems; DSMIV; CPT4; ICD-O; registries including tumor, trauma, drug, medical devices, and similar registries. One hour lecture; two hours lab.
0204. Management of Health Information Systems Technology (3 s.h.) S
A critical survey of patient-oriented health information systems, the technologies and management practices needed to support them. Emphasis on aspects of the evolving computer-based patient record (CPR).
0205. Health Information Systems in Nonacute Care (3 s.h.) S Junior
Prerequisite: HIM 106 and HIM 141; Corequisite: HIM 105. A survey of health information systems for specialty departments and institutions such as psychiatric hospitals, developmental disabilities facilities, long term (geriatric) care facilities, ambulatory care facilities, industrial clinics, home care, hospice care, correctional institution care, school health services, and rural health consortium.
0207. International Classification of Disease (3 s.h.) S
Corequisite: HIM 0271 and 0274 or permission of instructor. In depth study of the principles of the International Classification of Disease and their significance for reimbursement; application in laboratory practice. Methods of assessing reliability of coded data are included; includes laboratory component.
0208. Coding for Reimbursement (3 s.h.) FS
Prerequisite: HIM 0207. A continuation of HIM 0207, addressing more complex problems in ICD-9-CM, with emphasis on reimbursement issues; principles and application of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); automated encoding; DRG assignment. Laboratory component. One hour lecture, four hours lab.
0209. Quality Assessment and Improvement (3 s.h.) S
Prerequisite: Enrolled in final year of study. Medical staff credentialing; utilization, risk and quality management processes; clinical outcomes management; organizational TQM with emphasis on Health Information Services data analysis, display and presentation techniques. Two hours lecture; two hours lab.
0251. Fundamentals of Biostatistics (2 s.h.) F
Prerequisites: Core requirements in Math. Scientific approach to conceptual foundation of health information management. Basic research methodology, elementary biostatistics, analysis and interpretation, and presentation of data. Purpose is to develop appreciation for professional research development and objective analysis. Two hours lecture.

Prerequisite: HIM 0103. An introduction to the clinical aspects of selected general medical conditions and diseases, including diagnostic procedures, clinical course, therapy, and expected outcome.

Prerequisite: HIM 0103. Complements Clinical Medicine I. Topics include orthopedics; ophthalmology; radiology; neurology; obstetrics; gynecology; psychiatry; plastic surgery.
W281. Clinical Affiliation III (3 s.h.) F
Prerequisite: HIM 183 and 205; Pre- or Corequisites: HIM 203, 207, and 263. Supervised learning experience for application of health information systems in nonacute care settings. Includes geriatric care setting and a variety of other nonacute care settings. Practicum: six hours day once a week for eight weeks.
0282. Clinical Affiliation IV (3 s.h.) S
Prerequisite: Final year of study. Intensive clinical experience on a full-time basis for four weeks at selected affiliated institutions; emphasis on administrative aspects of health information management services. Four weeks practicum.
0289. Practicum Elective in Health Information Management (2 s.h.) FS
Prerequisite: Permission of the department. Clinical experience in health information systems of a specialized facility of particular interest to the student.
0290. Independent Study in Health Information Management (1-3 s.h.) FS
Prerequisites: Major in Health Information Management and permission of the department. Individual study of an aspect of health information management in accordance with the interest and ability of the student and the approval of the department chairperson. Credits according to the nature and extent of the project.
0299. Current Issues in Health Information Management (1-3 s.h.) FS
Enrollment limited to credentialed medical information management practitioners. Issues of current interest and concern to Accredited Record Technicians and Registered Record Administrators. Topics vary each semester; therefore, an individual may earn credit for this course more than once.
0301. Documentation of Patient Care: Systems and Standards (3 s.h.) FS
Prerequisite: Permission of department. For nonmajors. Survey of patient health information systems, including legal, regulatory, and accrediting agency standards for documentation and information generation and flow; automation of information systems; organization and tools for medical care evaluation; and utilization review.
0342. Political and Social Aspects of Health Care (2 s.h.) S
Prerequisite: Final semester standing. Analysis of impact of public policy formation in health care with emphasis on resultant health information management practice. Includes legislative and regulatory process, social issues of privacy, consumer representation, medical ethics, financial impact, risk management, and malpractice issues.
0343. Information Management for Health Care Financing (3 s.h.) S
Prerequisite: HIM W281; Corequisite: Final year of study. Case mix and cost control methodologies, managed care, utilization, and case management. Emphasis on health data collection, access and disclosure practices of primary and secondary databases, billing audits.
