Course Numbering System

Temple University renumbered its undergraduate and graduate courses beginning with first summer session 2007. The current course numbers follow specific guidelines:

07xx: Preparatory courses.

08xx: General Education courses.

09xx: Honors General Education courses.

1xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their first year of study.

2xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their second year of study.

3xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their third year of study.

4xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.

5xxx: Courses primarily for graduate students; however, undergraduate students in their third or fourth year may enroll in such courses with permission.

8xxx: Courses appropriate for graduate students only.

9xxx: Courses appropriate for graduate students only.

Honors courses have a “9” as the second digit (x9xx) and their titles contain the word “Honors.” Honors courses can be found by selecting the "View Honors Courses Only" option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

Writing Intensive course numbers end in “96,” “97” or “98.”

General Education (GenEd) courses are numbered 08xx; GenEd Honors courses are numbered 09xx. GenEd courses are also identified by the Required Course Identifier (RCI). Look for RCIs that begin with the letter "G". GenEd courses can also be found by selecting the View General Education Courses Only option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

Core courses are identified by their RCI.  Core courses can also be found by selecting the "Core Requirements" option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

The old course numbers appear throughout this web site in parentheses, unless otherwise noted.  For more details on the course numbering system, go to the Course Renumbering web site at http://renumbering.temple.edu. The "Course Menu" option on the Course Renumbering web site provides a searchable database of courses with their old and new numbers.

University General Education (GenEd) Curriculum

New freshman and transfer students admitted in the fall 2010 or after will follow the General Education, or GenEd, program.

(Note: Transfer students admitted prior to fall 2010 follow the Core Curriculum requirements.)

GenEd at Temple is about making connections.

Temple faculty and administration have been at work for years on this new program, and here's why -- as the 21st century advances, the amount of information available to us and the speed with which we can access information continues to expand at a stunning pace. We exist in a virtual storm of information. GenEd is a response to this reality: it redefines what it means to be an educated person. In a world where no one can hope to know it all, the best way to prepare for the future is to learn how information is linked and how pieces of information are interrelated.

In our GenEd classes we draw connections between academic knowledge and current controversies. Whether it's understanding digital mapping, the causes of poverty in Philadelphia or global climate change, GenEd classes will involve cutting edge issues.

Many GenEd courses make connections between the classroom, the city of Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia region. Temple is embedded in a dynamic urban environment, providing a fascinating context for learning. An art course will take you to museums, dance performances and to historic buildings to see battle re-enactments. An education course will make you an active participant in local schools and community centers. An environmental science course will take you to a 19th century sewage treatment plant now restored as The Waterworks. In these and many other ways, GenEd will mix your coursework with more vibrant experience of the city and the region, ultimately giving you a sense of Philadelphia's connections to the world.

GenEd courses also feature connections across different areas of study. Learn Shakespeare through literature, dance and music. Look at film from the perspectives of race, gender and ethnicity. Take a course in sustainable design that blends geology, landscape architecture and ethics. GenEd courses encourage you to develop the ability to view complex problems through multiple lenses.

In preparation for the launch of Temple's GenEd in 2008, many of Temple's finest faculty worked hard for years to develop innovative new courses. They will continue to improve their teaching, and continue to make the GenEd program an outstanding learning experience.

GenEd introduces you to nine areas of learning and a total of eleven courses. The following tables demonstrate the areas and the total number of credits required in each area.

^Students who have completed Intellectual Heritage 1196 and still need to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1297 requirement can complete Mosaic 0851 or 0852. Honors students who have completed Intellectual Heritage 1996 and still need to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1997 requirement can complete Mosaic 0951 or 0952.

^^GQ courses can be used to satisfy either QA or QB Core requirements; however, students required to complete the Core Curriculum must complete a total of two courses to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning requirement.

Core Course Eliminations

With the introduction of GenEd, several Core courses are no longer offered at Temple University (excluding the Japan campus). Core students can use GenEd replacement courses to satisfy the corresponding Core area.

Click here for the Eliminated Core Course list.

If you previously completed one of these Core courses and would like to replace the grade, you will need to take the designated GenEd substitute. The repeat course may not be used to satisfy multiple areas of Core.

Students who have earned credit for one or more of the Core courses on the list cannot earn additional credit for the corresponding GenEd course (with the exception of Mosaic and GenEd Math courses). For example, if a student has successfully completed SOC 1376 (R059), s/he cannot earn additional credit for any of the following: AF-AM S 0829, ANTHRO 0829, GUS 0829, History 0829, POL SCI 0829, or SOC 0829.

Note: GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy multiple Core areas; GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy Core Writing Intensive requirements. Consult your advisor for details to develop a revised plan for meeting Core requirements.

All 0900 level courses are part of the Honors program; students must be in Temple's Honors program to register for those courses.

This information does NOT apply to freshmen or new transfer students admitted in fall 2010, who must use General Education courses to fulfill their General Education requirements.

For further details about the eliminated Core courses and their GenEd substitutes, click here.

Core Course List

Below is the basic list of the courses approved for each Core area. This list includes GenEd courses that are approved for Core credit. All GenEd course numbers begin with "08xx"; all GenEd Honors course numbers begin with "09xx".   For descriptions of any courses, look in this publication under the department offering the course. Note that the numbers in parentheses are the course numbers used prior to the first Summer Session 2007.

To see if a course is being offered in any particular semester, search the Course Schedule online at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

For a comprehensive list of Writing-Intensive courses, Core requirements and policies, descriptions of the Core areas, and other Core-related information, visit the Transfer Information web site at www.temple.edu/vpus/transfer/index.htm.
