01524/General and Strategic Management

The General and Strategic Management department teaches and conducts research in three areas: entrepreneurship, international business, and strategy. The department is responsible for teaching for the undergraduate capstone course, BA 361 - Business Policies.
 

Upper Division Courses

0100. Introduction to Asian Business Practices (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: Economics C050 or C051 or C052 or C055.

This course is designed to enable you to grasp broad knowledge on Asian business practices. It will examine the similarities and dissimilarities among Japanese, Chinese, and Korean businesses and the special features of Japanese business, such as the network relationships among companies groups called "keiretsu." Given our understanding of the above issues, we will examine how American companies should compete in Asia.

Note: Fox School students must be a junior or have special permission of your academic adviser.

0101. Introduction to Latin American Business Practices (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: Economics C050 or C051 or C052 or C055.

This course is designed to give you a solid basis to face a job assignment related to business in a Latin American country and to develop your ability to perceive the importance of cultural diversity and how it influences business activities across Latin American countries. Specifically, this course will help you understand the specific challenges of doing business in Latin America and enable you to perceive and understand the differences in the business environment, business customs, and business practices between countries of Latin America and of the rest of the world.

0111. Entrepreneurship (3 s.h.) F S.

The role and impact of entrepreneurial firms on the U.S. economy will be discussed. The growth of these firms from inception to maturity and the "Innovation" formula as a method for new opportunities will be explored. The focus is on an interdisciplinary approach.

0261. Software Applications to Business Problems (3 s.h.) F S SS.

Provides "hands-on" experience in application of personal computer software to business problems. Students learn to use the Excel spreadsheet and to use this program for tasks such as evaluating investment opportunities, amortizing a loan, planning for the timely completion of a number of related projects, financial statement analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.

W362. Senior Entrepreneurship Seminar (3 s.h.) F S. Core: WI.

Prerequisite: General and Strategic Management 0311.

The main objective of this course is to provide the student with an understanding of the problems and challenges facing an entrepreneur in the process of creating a business plan and seeking investors. The course will use a group project as the focal point. The groups will develop a business plan piece by piece. Each group will make 4 brief presentations and write 4 papers during the semester. In addition, each students will evaluate the presentations of the groups, choosing the top three and the one in which they would invest. In addition, each student will do a detailed analysis of one of the companies we study during the semester.

0380. Global Strategic Management (3 s.h.) F S SS.

An examination of the distinctive management issues that arise when firms are either contemplating or already doing business across national boundaries. This course requires the integration and application of knowledge and skills learned in earlier courses and also introduces the critical business skills of understanding and managing strategic issues in international settings.

0381. International Business Management (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: All other courses in the International Business Administration major and Economics 0250.

In this course the student will develop an understanding of the "nuts and bolts" of international business. Possible topics include how to meet legal requirements to import products, how to secure the services of an export agent, utilizing the resources of the US Government to establish an international business firm, customs procedures, among others. The course will include many expert invited speakers.

0385. Internship in Entrepreneurship I (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: GSM 0311.

Course consists of an internship with Temple University's Small Business Development Center, startup business, high-growth business, or family business (10 hours per week). Students taking GSM 0385 must contact Dr. Monica Zimmerman at mzimmer@sbm.temple.edu upon registering to arrange for the internship.

0386. Internship in Entrepreneurship II (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: GSM 0385.

Course consists of an intership with a startup business, high-growth business, or family business (10 hours per week).

Note: Students taking GSM 0386 must contact Dr. Monica Zimmerman at mzimmer@sbm.temple.edu upon registering to arrange for the internship.

0394. Special Topics (3 s.h.)

Special topics in current developments in the field of general and strategic management.

0395/0396. Independent Study (1 - 6 s.h.) F S SS.

Prerequisite: Consultation with faculty member and approval of department chairperson.

Readings and/or papers under supervision of a faculty member.
