The Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media Department
(BTMM) in Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater
offers you the opportunity to study media production and performance, media analysis, and media business and
entrepreneurship in the context of rapidly changing and converging

An Engaging and Meaningful Curriculum
BTMM courses prepare students for successful careers and lives. In
Media Production and Performance courses students learn to create media
content in a variety of formats and genres (news, music videos, sports, documentaries) for broadcast, cable,
Web and mobile media. In Television Practicum students
write, produce and perform for a news magazine program,Temple
Update. A sportsmagazine media production course is in the works. Check out some examples of student work.
In Media Business and Entrepreneurship courses students learn how to write plans and obtain funding for media businesses, and how to create and operate an ethical enterprise that produces and/or distributes media content.
In Media Analysis courses students learn how to thoughtfully and critically evaluate the role of media in contemporary culture, the nature of media institutions, and the ways we use and are affected by media. Across the curriculum, theory and analysis is combined with hands-on practice to create the most meaningful and enjoyable experience possible.
Diverse and Internationally Known Faculty
BTMM faculty are well known and regarded professionals, recognized
regionally, nationally and internationally for their media
productions and scholarship. They bring their expertise and their
passion for their work to BTMM students.
A new service from the Communication Institute of Online Scholarship (CIOS) ranks leading programs in Communication and Journalism across an array of research areas and topics. Rankings are based on faculty publication records and departmental affiliation for those faculty. Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media (BTMM) was ranked No. 7 in Critical Theory, No. 9 in Demographics research and No. 9 in Visualization.
The School of Communications and Theater Doctoral Program in Mass Media and Communication recently ranked 10th in the 2005 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, as reported in /The Chronicle of Higher Education/ on January 12, 2007.

An Internship in a Major Media Market
Philadelphia is the 5th largest city in the United States. It is the 4th largest television market and the 7th largest radio market. As such, students can expect a choice of internships at television network affiliates; dozens of radio stations; the studios of Comcast SportsNet, NFL Films and QVC; and at renowned recording studios, production companies and professional sports teams. Because of Temple University's strong International Program it is even possible to pursue internship opportunities in London,Tokyo,Rome and other cities around the world.

A Vibrant, Wired Campus
We also welcome you to a vibrant campus that is among the best wired in the country. It features over 200 student organizations and a career-focused student body. The BTMM department is located in Annenberg Hall on the creative north end of campus, which is also home to the Boyer College of Music and soon to be the new home
of the Tyler School of Art.
Temple University has been named among the best wired campuses by
the Princeton Review. The campus Tech Center is a useful resource
for BTMM students because it features a 24 hour Help Desk and
access to 600 workstations, 100 wireless loaner laptops, and
specialized labs for video editing, music production and graphic
design.
