BTMM STUDENTS

Internships

Internships provide students with opportunities to work on the cutting edge of their fields while obtaining course credit. Hundreds of businesses, organizations, and institutions in the metropolitan area, as well as those across the nation, cooperate in providing opportunities for BTMM students to work in relevant professional ways for course credit. For some examples of places BTMM students have interned, see the list towards the bottom of this page.

All BTMM Majors are required to complete either an internship or a practicum. If you choose an internship, please make sure that you complete all three of the steps below in the order given to ensure that you’ll be eligible to receive credit for the experience.

Follow these 3 steps to your internship:

STEP 1: Apply for Authorization to take the Internship Course
DEADLINES for semesters:
SUMMER: May 1, 2007
FALL: July 1, 2007

Applications (link) must be submitted to the BTMM Office in AH 205.

It’s important to note that the earlier you get your application in and are approved, the earlier you can secure your internship. It’s a competitive market, especially during the summer, so don’t wait until the deadline to apply for approval.

The requirements for admission are:
• Junior or Senior standing
• Completion of all BTMM core courses: 1011, 1021 and 1041
• A minimum 2.5 GPA in the major
• No outstanding incompletes

STEP 2: Secure a Position with an Organization (see suggestions below). All positions must be secured prior to the start of classes.

Each student is responsible for contacting organizations, setting up interviews and responding to offers.

The department does not contact potential internship sites for students. Students are encouraged to make use of the resources on this site and in the BTMM office for assistance in choosing potential host organizations.

Overseas internship placements are handled by our study abroad partners in their respective countries. For information on SCT Study Abroad programs, please visit: www.temple.edu/sct/study away.html

STEP 3: Register for the Internship – BTMM 4785 (391)
Students must complete Internship registration through the BTMM Office. Students will need to submit the following information at the time of registration:

• Name of the organization at which you’ll be serving your Internship
• Your internship supervisor’s:
  - name
  - email address
  - fax and phone numbers

Please understand that these are policies, not suggestions or guidelines. These policies must be followed in order to participate in an internship.

If you have any questions about the program, its procedures or its requirements, please contact our Internship Coordinator, Dr. Betsy Leebron Tutelman at 215-204-2483, or e-mail betsy@temple.edu.

Why should I do an internship?
• You get on the job training.
• You have the opportunity to network with media professionals.
• You can test the position before you enter the job market.
• You can put the professional experience on your resume.
• BTMM majors are required to have an internship or practicum to graduate.

How can I find out about opportunities?
• There are several volumes in the BTMM office which you can peruse, or speak with Professor Leebron about possibilities.
• You can check the Philadelphia Creative Directory or The NATPE Station Guide (a list of television stations around the nation by market) for potential sites.
• There are many websites you can search for internships such as:

See link to the right for the SCT Los Angeles summer internship.

Check below for more listings of internship possibilities.

What are the program's requirements?
• BTMM students must be of junior standing.
• You must complete the major core and have some coursework in the related area.
• You must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or have permission from the Internship Director.
How many credits is an internship?
• The maximum number of credits you can receive for an internship is 4, so for those wishing to do more than one, you can spread the credits out over two semesters. Credits relate to the number of hours on site. We recommend 15-20 hours for four credits.
How do I register for an internship?
• File an application in the BTMM office.
• Once you have been approved for the internship, you will need to fill out a drop/add slip.
What are the responsibilities of an intern?
• Set up a workable schedule with your supervisor and adhere to it. It is best to allocate two full days as opposed to five hours here and there.
• Keep a journal or e-mail it to the Director.
• Attend meetings on campus or e-mail the director every other week.
• Write two papers during the semester.
• You must meet with your site supervisor on a regular basis (there are two site evaluations).
Can I get credit for an internship I did last summer?
• No, there is no retroactive registration for the internship.
Can I do it during the summer and pay for it in the fall?
• No, for insurance reasons, you must be registered in the semester in which you are on site.
So what do I have to do? What are all the things I have to know to get my internship?

• Click here for the BTMM Internship Application Form (in MS Word format)
What if I have more questions?

Print Journalism

IHS Journalism Internships provide a stipend, housing
allowance, and travel allowance. Interns are placed at daily
newspapers across the country and participate in an opening
career building workshop. The internship offers real
reporting assignments -- interns this summer averaged 30
clips. Applications are currently available online.

The deadline for early decision is November 1. For
more information, please visit www.theihs.org/journalism.

Broadcast Journalism

IHS Broadcast Journalism internships offer hands-on paid
internships at major media networks or news production
houses. Last year we sponsored internships at CNN in Atlanta,
ABC's "20/20" in Manhattan, and Fox News in Los Angeles,
among others. Spring, summer and fall placements are
available. For more information, please visit
www.TheIHS.org/broadcast.

Production

IHS Production Internships are expanding to include
placements in video game development in addition to feature
film, documentaries, and animation. Spring placements are
available in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and other
major media centers across the country. Past internship hosts
have included Warner Brothers, Focus Features, Big Mouth
Productions, and more. We consider applicants at all levels
of experience -- from extensive camera work and training in
Final Cut Pro to simply a general interest and desire to work
in the film and media industry. Find out more at
www.TheIHS.org/production.

Scholarships for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

The Humane Studies Fellowships award up to $12,000 to
outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, including
the fields of law and journalism, who are exploring the
principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free
society through their academic work. Open to all students
pursuing a degree full-time in the 2008-2009 academic year.
The deadline to apply is December 31. www.TheIHS.org/hsf.
